I have a 1949 farmall o-s6 & it won`t go into fourth or fifth gear. All other gears work fine.Is there anyway that I can find out what the trouble is without taking the top off the trans? This is all new to me.Tractor was like this when I bought it. Thanks for any help,Don.

Taking the top off the trans caee is not a big deal just make sure you clean it first and buy some gasket paper at your local engine shop so you can make a new one if the old one tears. its really the only way to tell if something serios is in there. But first drain the oil out in a CLEAN bucket. if its not full of grinds (or worse yet gear teeth) you can put it back in. use a mechanics magnet to see how much crud is in the trans case. Who knows it might only be a misalighned throw spider.
