Someone recommened Copper Coat as the best head gasket sealer. Anybody want to give me any other advise before I stick my head on after months of work (part time) tomorrow night? Is Copper Coat the best stuff?

CH, The newer production gaskets are already coated and most have a note packed with them in the box that says DO NOT USE SEALER WITH THIS GASKET . Also there is a very large difference between copper spray brands . Once you use K & W copper coat you will never go back to permatex .

I agree with George md. I never use anything on head gaskets and have never had one leak or blow. When removing head gaskets they are usually stuck well even if no sealer was used in mounting the head. It's relatively simple to check the block and head for excessive warping by using a straightedge long enough to reach beyond the diagonal corners, and a feeler guage. Most head gasket problems stem from incorrect tightening sequence and/or bolt torque.

I was told by a stock car engine builder to use spray Hylomar on head gaskets. It is so good that they can reuse head gasket. Recommended by Mercedes and VW. He Said copper coat was the next best.
This Product is made in Germany and is not the same as as Hylomar gel made by Permatex.
I have reused several head gaskets useing spray Hylomar.

Thanks, I hope I don't have to reuse it.

Yes yes yes copper coat (Kopper Koat?????) Spray is best....clean nozzle with berryman's chem tool when finished.....shake it good and spray some for a test sample first, to get the copper in suspension. Light coat all over, install tacky. Keeps the head gasket from squirming if there are no alignment pins.....never leaks.....the only reason mfgr's recommend using a dry gasket in my opinion is that they don't have control over what you use.

Have you ever tried to seat a head on a 454 Chev station wagon by yourself.....the head weighs around 50+ lbs, and you are bent over the fender with all that weight out front of you....then you have to hope you didn't scoot the head gasket.....Kopper Koat.

I don't know whether it is the right thing to do but I have always used the spray on coppor coat when doing head gasket. That is what the stuff is for. Haven't had any problems as of yet with it just a little insurance.

Hey CH, unless the service manual specifically calls for a sealer on the head gasket you shouldn't use anything on it. The usual purpose of a sealer is to help fill in any imperfections in the sealing area to prevent oil, water, etc from escaping. In the case of a head I don't know of any of the sealers that would be able to seal the pressure and heat of compression that a head gasket is subjected to. Most but not all head gaskets are gonna be some kind of metal and gasket material "sandwich" and every one I've ever seen like that has always been put on with no type of sealer. The older two stroke Detroits have individual rings around each cylinder and then have "rubber" rings for the oil and water ports and even these are put in without any type of sealer. There are so many different engine mfgs out there that there very well may be one that calls for a sealer of some sort on the head gasket or in that area at least(Like around water and oil ports), but in all the engines I've built and seen built I've never run into one myself. Just my .02 Good luck.

This is a B125 Allis engine. The manual calls for a non-setting gasket cement. It's a old block and head. I'd feel comfortable spraying a thin coat of Coppercoat just to make sure it doesn't leak.

Good advise, If the manufacture didn't use sealer when they put 1000's of them together they must know what they where doing. More is not always best

Using Copper coat is a good idea on older engines. For over time the block and head warps somewhat due to heat. Which is normal and copper coating fills these gaps.

If you are using Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket. Do not forget to shake the stuff up. also shake the can often when appling. For if it is not mixxed well you will end up with more glue than copper on your parts.

Tip with using Permatex copper coating. If it fisheyes when you apply it. Your parts are to cold.
