Does the automatic stand up well compared to a standard w a Cummins? 2003-2004 models. I would be planning to pull a 20' stock trailer.

I have a '92 Dodge 3/4 ton Cummins with auto with 326,000 miles on it. No trouble at all either with engine or tranny. Change oil every 3000 miles, air filter every 6 months, fuel filter every 6 months, serpentine belt every 60,000 miles, change tranny fluid and adjust bands every 20,000. Good maintenance=good performance. The Cummins is one fine engine. Also no trouble with brakes at all, either.

from chrysler-dodge-plymouth or whatever
they decide they want to call themself.
I guess it daimler now. It is just the
big two now. No more big three.
The goverment bailed them out once and
now they are gone again!! I owned two
of them pieces of junk and will never own
another ever again!!!

I had 2 dodges with the auto, wouldn't have
another.It's basically a car tranny with a
different torque converter.I've seen several
go out at less than 20K miles. It's not uncommon
to have two or three rebuilds in 100K miles.
It's geared to high in first gear to start a load and to high in reverse.I've had to use the
4x4 to get started on a hill with a 6 ton tractor
on the trailer.I usually need the 4x4 low range
to back around when loaded. The engine is about the only good part of a Dodge.Don't get me started on brakes.

Here's the problems I've had with a Dodge tranny:
1998 Ram 2500 gas engine. I bought it with 98,000 miles on it. It had been a company truck. You hope the company that had it followed a strict maintenance program, but you can't be sure. At 102,000 the tranny went out. Spent $2k on a rebuild. It lasted 14 months and 14,000 miles and went out again. I don't know how much of that to put on the tranny and how much to put on the rebuild shop. The truck gets very little abuse. I only tow once in awhile (18' flatbed car hauler). I also don't know if my tranny is the same automatic that Dodge puts in the diesels. It does have me a little wary. I'll stick with it for now simply because the truck is paid for and I can't afford a new one right now.

We have an 03 4WD with Cummins and auto tranny in our fleet. It was a dog with a heavy load until we chipped it. The 03 transmission WILL NOT gear down out of OD if you are over 65 mph. Empty it ran fine even before we added the chip. With that Quadzilla chip, it's a different truck. Runs great, pulls great, and the fuel mileage went up about 8 mpg. If I hadn't driven the truck before and after, I wouldn't beleive the difference. Email me any other questions.

Don't know about the 04.

I have a '95 Dodge diesel w/auto, and pull a gooseneck livestock and 24 ft. flatbed. Have had a over sensitive brake switch go out inside the transmission, as it kept shifting down from overdrive to direct all the time. No tranny problems besides that and have 110,000 miles on it and it runs great. Change trans. fluid every 20,000 once they get over 100,000. You hear alot of horror stories about autos, but I can't complain, knock on wood.

They are a good transmission. Just follow the instructions in the manual about turning off the OD when required and have it serviced every 20,000 miles and adjust the bands which alot of people don't do. Mine lasted 210,000 miles with alot of towing.
