The serial number on my 49 M has an X1 following it, what does that mean?

X1 means gasoline engine.

The reason for questioning that was that I have found more than one 49M with no X1, but they to are gasoline tractors.

X1 means that the tractor came from the factory equipped to burn gasoline. The other Ms you have looked at were originally distillate burners, but nearly all of those have been converted to gasoline because the distillate fuel became obsolete many, many years ago.

If you have a gas burner, most likely your head casting number will be 8060D
