From what I gather, the mesh inside the air cleaner is supposed to get coated with oil from the oil-bath cup and then collect the dust and such. What's the best way to clean the mesh?

When I was an apprentice mechanic at an Allis Chalmers dealer my job was to steam clean all the tractors coming in for an overhaul.I steam cleaned all the air cleaner mesh.

Steam Cleaning! Now that's a thought! Maybe I should take it down to the car wash and get the high pressure spray going.

Never thought of the car wash idea, I like it and am going to try it next time. Thanks

Thank you. I think I'll start with the bucket soak and go from there.

If your air cleaner is on a diesel engine, be very careful to get the mesh completely dry after you clean it. Leftover solvent in the air cleaner can cause a runaway engine.

Dan: When I first got my 730 the air cleaner screan was so dirty and plugged that I ddin't know what to do. I soaked with solvent and blew out with air repeatedly for days. It finally occured to me to burn it clean. I used a propane torch and then air three times. It worked pretty good.

The better designed air cleaners are designed to be disassembled to clean the mesh. As mentioned below, soaking will sometimes get them clean.

Take the oil cup off, and then set the entire unit in a bucket, fill the bucket with diesel fuel or solvent, and let it sit for a couple of days. Pull the air cleaner out, set it somewhere and let it drain, then blow it dry with compressed air. You may want to agitate things a bit while it is in the bucket.

Dan - Simply soak the elements in diesel fuel for a few days to loosen the crud then flush several times with fresh fuel oil. To me, the oil-bath air cleaner is just as effiecent and much more cost effective than the newer paper elements.
