Hello,

I'm interesting in getting a Oliver 1650 or 1750. My hauling rig is a 2001 Dodge 2500 with Cummins Diesel, 2wd, with no extra cab. The trailer is a 12,000GVW gooseneck. I live in PHX, Arizona and would most likely have to travel to the Midwest to get a good one. I know these tractors (with liquid filled tires) weigh in around 8,000lbs+.

Do you think I have enough rig to pull it over some steep (6 percent) moutainous grades?

Regards,
Tim

My 1655 FWA with cab and fluid in all 4 tires weighed in at over 13,000 lbs. A 1750 could weigh more.

Tim:
I have the same truck w/six speed, which means the engine is the HO version (245 hp, 505 ft/lbs). I have made similar trips to Texas, Ark, MO and back through Colo to AZ with my trailer and goodies. You have plenty of power. The only weak spot is trailer tires. If you don't already have them, put the biggest 10 ply tires you can get on the trailer. These trucks are rated to gross 20,000lbs, which means you should be able to handle 10,000 lbs or so depending on what your trailer weighs. IMHO the Cummins engine can't be beat. Power will not be a problem.

Well your trailer is large enough as you give the GVW. (8000# on a 12000# GVWR trailer)
Now what about your truck. Look at the drivers door or post and find the manufacture tag. What is the GVWR. This is the maxium weight for your truck. Now add the weight of every thing. Truck Trailer Load. Are you below the GVWR of your truck.

It may be a slow go up a 6 precent grade but any truck pulls hard and looses speed and has to be down shifted to pull this kind of grade. I would worry more about going down a 6 persent grade with the load. If you have ever seen a truck in a run away ramp you will know what I mean.

I agree, going DOWN that 6% grade will be a much bigger challenge than going up. Make certain you know what you are doing before you start out.
