I am looking into getting another tractor, have looked at a 1586 and a 5488. What would be the better one? any problems with any? Would also consider a 5288. Thank-you.Phil

I would go with the 5488 hands down. We have a 5488 and a 1086 and the 5488 is all around a better tractor. If you buy a 5488 make sure it has had the tranny updates done, most have by now but it is about $6,000 to do them if it hasn't. I honestly can't think of one thing I like better about our 1086 than our 5488. We paid $11,700 for our 5488 at an auction last year with 6,400 hours with duals and decent tires. We put new tires (changed from 20.8x38 to 18.4x42) on it last spring then last fall it spun a main bearing so we put a reman engine in it and we are planning on painting it this spring. After we paint it we will still only have about $20,000 in it and two years before we bought it it had $5,600 spent on the rear end. I used our 5488 to pull our bean planter last spring and it was a pleasure to run even for 20 hours a day, especially compared to the 1066 it replaced.

The 1586 and 5288 are both rated at around 160 HP while the 5488 is rated at 187 HP. The 1586 has a DT436 while the 5288 and 5488 both use DT466's with 5488 having an intercooler. The 1586 has 12 forward speeds while the 88's have 18. The 88's will weigh about 1000 lbs more than the 1586. The 5288 that I used to have had an intercooler on it and was set at over 200 HP. I liked the shifting on the 88's better than the 86's. On the other hand you will spend more money on the 88's if you need to have transmission work done at some time. I traded the 5288 that I had for a 7140MFD and the 1486 got traded for a 5140MFD. I have never been sorry that I did it. If you want my advice forget the 86's and 88's if you can afford the higher price of the Magnum. You will like the Magnum better in the long run if it fits your operation.
