After reading the "add on" posts on the topic of "what are they teaching in our schools" and the guy replying that this is a tractor forum. Well I have to say this... Wow how did he figure that out??? But I can see he doesnt look at the big picture of this web site. How many of you consider the people that you talk to or help or that help you are your friends????? ???? I know I do. I love helping people and getting a good laugh out of the problems they are having that I have had but even better when I post a question and someone gives me the answer and it was simple and I overlooked it. Its humbling. We all need that from time to time. But anyways back to the subject. This forum has the same folks on it all the time every night. I get withdrawls if I dont get my "fix" on this website every night. Why cant we ask the questions that are burning in our minds. It give us other perspectives on things in the world. Now I dont think that the off topic questions should over run the purpose of the site but the question sure do make you think. Doesnt everyone remember when someone posts a good result from an operation??? Or when someone anounces a son or daughter getting married?? Or graduating from high school/college??? Just relax. If you dont want to read something the dont read it. Simple. But allow those of us who care about the topics, are going through the same thing, or are looking for another point of view a chance to comment. Im off my soap box now. Bye all

Seems to me that every year about this time we see more quarelsome posts. I guess from being on this board for several years that it isn't going to change. When the grass starts turning green again they will go away, as usual. Just another week or so and it will be March...getting close...keep the tractor off the lawn...it'll leave ruts. Cabin fever gets us all...it was channel fever in the navy. No arguments here...Fred OH

The truth is that you all come back here to read about tractors. If only 10% of the posts were tractor related and the rest were like reading Dear Abby in the newspaper you all would get tired of searching thru all the junk posts.

Happends to boards like this all the time.

If you want to maintain this on line community then it is best to stay on topic. Have Kim open new subject areas if you think you need them.

This ends up being a tough call. We can discuss and argue this point until we're blue in the face and nothing is ever going to be resolved here. The solution is to ask Kim the webmaster what her feelings are, after all she's the boss I guess. Well, no need really because her feelings are posted at the top here where she mentions the fact that the posts should be "tractor related". It's the same with classified ads here on the discussion forums. Kim posts very clearly that for sale or wanted items are not to be posted here (and it's right there before you submit your post) yet we (me included) continue to overlook her simple request. She even reminds us that we are to use the classifieds for such posts. She provides Country Talk and Tractor Tales forums for those of us who wish to get into the everyday living stuff. She even tried the ill-fated "Common Ground" forum that blew completely out of control. I think all of us should honor her request about what is and what is not to be posted here and cooperate with what is undoubtedly the best tractor forum on the internet. Well, that's my two cents and I guess I've even broken the rules by responding, it's easy to do and at times difficult to avoid I guess.

Okay, I'll chime in. I have to go with what Indyfarmer said. It expresses exactly how I feel. Click here to read it.

I know that it can be disconcerting to some when the balance of posts leans heavier to the off-topic side - especially to those who are newer to the forum and more interested in "tractor talk". But we are a community, not just a question and answer board. And I think it is totally appropriate to be discussing this right now. I like the way you are handling it, like a group of friends trying to decide what is best for all.

I say just try to keep the balance leaning towards the tractor related stuff.. but don't worry about going off-topic. As long as it doesn't dominate. And if you see it dominating, don't be shy about giving everyone a gentle reminder and starting up a tractor-related thread.

And may I take this opportunity to say that you all are a wonderful group of people.

Kim

Hi Kim: Just a thought. I have seen on another forum about trucks they have a section called the Pig Pen where people can put their quarrelsome posts. Appropriate name, eh? It could be tried here but I think we had that a couple of years ago, and you had to close it because people got too rude, mean and nasty.

Thanks Kim, I guess that should put the debate to rest and as you say, it's OK as long as it doesn't take over the forum. I guess it pretty much only shows on the Tractor Talk Forum, the more specific forums like MH, Case, etc. don't seem to get too much of it if any, although the 'ad thing' does get annoying at times. Keep up the great work.

This board is ABOUT tractors. It's nothing without the PEOPLE on it. We all have an interest in tractors. We all have lives beyond tractors. (or at the very least, we SHOULD have a life beyond tractors) There is nothing wrong with the occasional discussion of a topic OTHER THAN old tractors. If you don't have any interest in a thread, scroll on by. No one forces anyone to become involved in ANY thread. I log on to this site to disscuss tractors/impliments. I also find the day to day lives of other enthusiast's to be interesting, as well as educational. If you don't agree, you just might be in the minority. If you are bothered by the content of the "average post", go start your own message board, and restrict the content to "tractors only". Then see how few post's you get. JMHO. John

I understand your point, and at times I agree. But, it is such a fine line to walk.... I did not read the 'School' thread yet, looks like an active one. Nothing to do with tractors I'll guess.

Read a thread up above about a person begging for free equipment. Maybe true, maybe not, but people need to learn to provide for themselves, don't know that they should be begging for handouts here - what's right or wrong? I donno. Nothing about tractors tho.

Read another one about prostrate cancer. Doesn't look like that one will be much about tractors tho....

Read this one. Not really about tractors.

I'm about ready to move on to other sites for tonight, spent my time at this one for the evening - couple more nites like this, and don't know - is it worth coming back or not?

It's such a fine line..... .. I do not know what is right or wrong, & I don't run the world (good thing! :) - just kinda like those off-topic threads to be few & far between. I would be really bummed if I had asked a question here yesterday, and it is almost on page 2 already, & no one saw it or took the energy to see it because it got knocked off page one or everyone too busy with welfare, health & snake oil, or education system issues to bother..... Go to yahoo & click on the 'groups' area & you can find a whole lot more on all thesesues - all the discussion you want on those topics. Why here?

I'd go to a different site to post my questions on tractors if mine got squeezed out of the way....

Two weeks of that, and any web site is dead. www.farms.com used to have a wonderful discussion area; they remodeled it, mis-named it a chat area, and stopped moderating it for off-topic stuff. Go check, see how it is doing for content & traffic today....

What's right, what's wrong? Sure, we can all not read the threads we don't like. We're all fickle tho - quick to jump to the next hot site.

With writing all this, I coulda answered 3 questions instead. Ask the people who post questions, what's right, what's wrong.... As soon as I hit 'post message' another tractor message drops to page 2.....

I'm off to tractor by net.com & newagtalk.com for the nite. You all have a good one. :)

--->Paul

Good grief, I can't believe someone would take the time to read through something that they don't like. I, like the most of you love this site! As I've said before, it's like getting a new magazine every day. The people on here are the best in the world.
My vote is to leave well enough alone. Larry NE IL

I agree with you to a point BradinVA but the website is set up to keep things moving in an orderly fashion,Tractor forums to deal with tractor subjects etc. This type of post could just as easily be posted on tractor tales or country living and would be viewed by the same people as on the tractor forums.A little cooperation could go a long ways.

I agree totally. This site has a alot of good folks on it. I read through it every night. I sometimes learn something, sometimes I just chuckle. And because part of my life envoles nursing 4 tracters,2 skidloaders, and 6 dumptrucks through every landscapeing season with IDIOTS who cant tie there own shoes, I like to put to memory some of the fix's that I read.
It is pretty easy to be an internet bully when you have annonimity. It's also nice to read about some of the posters good days and bad days. Lets all have a beer and enjoy.

thanks brad, I was just thinking if it would be alright to ask my friends if they had ever heard of a Vigorelli sewing machine.

Nebraska Cowman, one of the friends here. My grandmother had a Vigorelli, kind of a green colored electric one. I used to fix my own jeans when I was in my middle teens, and always tried to use the Vigorelli, as my mom just had an older treadle-type Singer.

This is my favorite web-site, and i'm on it every night when i'm home, and daytime, too. If i can help someone with a problem, i'll do it, no matter what it is! And, i'm happy to say, they've helped me, too! I've drawn up plans for old, wheel, farm grinder stands, a dumping yard cart, plans showing one way to hook up an orphan snow plow blade assy. to a tractor, and how to make the blade assy! I've sent them free of charge to anybody who asked for them, thru e-mail, and snail mail, and haven't asked for a dime! And don't intend to, either! The plans i send are sent in gratitude for the help others have sent me! Now, some of those things don't exactly pertain to tractors, but they're close! So, we'll let folks digress(?) from tractors once in a while. And, if ya can't stand what we do, there are plenty of other sites like this one, some where you can't say "BOO" without getting censored by the guy who cracks the whip! So, don't knock us--we're doing fine the way we do it! Rusty Jones

I always read the OT items because I don't want to miss anything. Most times I learn something.Besides,Kim is the moderator.Personally the OT's do not seem to be so frequent that they are disturbing. If I were to worry about missing the days new page I would figure out a way to read the dates ,even if they had to spill over on to page two.The posts are going to be here even if we have to move the pointer.I sure do enjoy the purity of opinions on this forum but I aint going to join the police force.
