Took the mag for my Allis-Chalmers WF apart to clean it up. The armature doesn't seem to want to come right out of the housing. Got the seal out but it has a seal holder staked in behind it. Tried a few wacks with a plastic hammer but no luck. Is there a snap ring behind the seal retainer or is the shaft just a tight press fit? Also was wondering about timing the gears. Label says there should be two letters on the large gear but mine has just a scratch mark on it. I imagine I set the scratch at the beveled tooth of the small gear but would like to hear from somone that has been down this road before. Any other tips would be appreciated! Thanks, Chris

hello Chris. i'm in the middle of the same project. got help from both this board and the AC board. if you check the AC board there is a post by me asking for info about the mag. fellow that answered me included a cross section view of that mag. that helped. my mag is off a B. i used an O-ring pick to get the seals and covers off both sides of the rotor. once that's out of the way you will see the retaining clips. one on either side. my original problem was removing the impulse coupler. the guys told me that it was on a taper. put the puller on it and popped it off. then things opened up and i could see. after removing the covers seals and retainers. i pressed the rotor shaft out of the housing. just slightly tighter than a slip fit. bearing stayed in the housing. then just pushed the bearing out using thumb pressure. i had to machine a new bronze bushing for inside the cap housing. the cap rotor gear was flopping around about .020, not good. also the main reason i tore it apart was that someone somehow badly cracked the alum. housing and i am getting it welded. i should have that done today and can start reassembly. i'm fairly new to these mags but i got the help i needed off the board. greg

This is from experience, and I've still got the junk to prove it: Careful with that hammer!: There's a flat disk over the bearing on the impulse end of the shaft. If I recall correctly, the bearing has snap rings on both the ID (shaft) and the O.D. (housing) underneath that disk. Don't know how you get the disk out. Best call that guy the others reccommended.

Thanks Kelvin that is just what I was afraid of. Have to work harder on that seal holder. Sorry to hear you learned the hard way! I appreciate your notes on that lesson from the school of hard knocks! Thanks,Chris

Hello Chris, Where in Washington are you located? I'm in Longview. Your best bet is to contact Bill Lopoulos. (blopoulos@aol.com) He deals with Magnetos. He is quite knowledgeable. Hope this helps, Joe
