Don't buy from dealers, you can probably buy the truck you want privately for 1/2 to 2/3 of what the dealers ask. Just have the cash to back up your offer. I would trust a private seller over a dealer in almost any circumstance.

Just surfing through and found your site. I sell cars for a living and I belive we as whole have been given a bum rap. First although there may seem to be a large difference between trade in and retail-one must consider the cost of advertising, sales staff, building and capital costs, insurance, interest to maintain a fleet of vehicles, etc. Not counting the risk in purchasing some vehicles. Second I have never gone out and made anybody buy my product. That a decision that falls squarely on the consumers shoulders. One must realize my job is to protect the interest of my employer and maximize profit levels-not to act as an agent for the buyer. That is left up to the purchaser to ensure the best price they can obtain through negotiation. Sure we ask as much as we can its called capatilism-it is up to the consumer to educate themselves on values, depreciation, long term costs, competitive prices, etc. We get a bad rap in part due to a consumer not willing to settle for a less expense vehicle that falls into their budget and biting off more than they can chew. Hope your car shopping experience becomes more pleasant!

The point I was trying to make for Larry yesterday is simply that he justifies screwing the public by saying he's acting as the dealers agent, not the buyers. This is true, but it doesn't excuse dishonest. Also, he forces no one to buy a car. I guess this thought lets him sleep better nights. I'll have to check with my manager and see if we can do that. That's when I walk. The sad fact is that anyone who has seriously vehicle shopped knows that price fixing is alive and well in the car business. Larry, you're right. It's not the salesmen. They are simply stooges for the dealers---saying what they've been told to say.

Mobob. I know it seems that the seller is shafting you on the price. But its not the seller who sets the price. Its the market. The market for that truck says its worth $16,900.
If no one buys it the market has just lowered the price.
Why should he sell you a truck that the Market says is worth $16000 to you for $10000 ?
Thats why my old 1991 ford F150 4wd ext cab is staying in my yard for as long as it will run. I dont like that Market. People are paying way to much for these things.

Your comment that the saleman never acts as an agent for the buyer has became a issue in our town in the past year. A local car dealer who always advertised the best vehicles at the lowest prices closed his business after it was discovered that he wasn't paying off loans on trade-ins or able to deliver titles on his merchandise. A lot of people were left having to make payments on both their trade-in and new vehicle at the same time. It amounted to over a million dollars worth of cars / trucks that were "sold" to purchasers who didn't "educate themselves"!

I'm in awe of them having the morals to want over 10 grand for a 10-11 or 12 year old pickup. Or cadillac. trouble is there are enough people out there who think it is a good deal.
