Looking at 3/4 ton Chevy pickup. Can I expect any difference in gas mileage for the 8100 engine with the 4 speed auto trans compared to the Allision 5 speed? What do you think of the 8100 engine?

Sam,
My former boss (retired) bought a new Chevy 3/4 ton with the 8100 engine and 5 speed 2 years ago to haul his camper. Being a Chevy man myself I was disappointed to hear Ray say that he only gets 7 MPG with this truck. The same time the maintenance guy on my shift bought a new F-250 with the power stroke diesel and 4 speed, he's getting 20 MPG and more low to mid range torque.
Hate to admit it, chalk one up for Ford.

I'm not sure about the 2500,but I recently bought a 2003 3500 with the 8.1 and it was
only offered with the Allison or a manual
transmission.

Your mileage will suffer slightly with the allison, due to the constant shifting, converter lock/unlock,but this can be remedied with a reprogram chip. Even then expect in town mileage to be in the 9-10 range, and towing mileage,10 or less if you are in a mountainous region loaded in the 15-18000# range. Pulls like heck, but they sure like their gas. This is what mine averages,it's a 93 2500,8.1, with allison.

What year is your truck? Did you say a 1993?

The 8.1 is one gutsy engine, you will never run out of power, but forget the automatic. Go with the 6 speed manual.

easier said than done. I just bought a 2500 6.0 gas & search thru 100 chevys. 97 of 'em were autos, 3 man. I got lucky & found 1 of the 3 next to home. All 3 of the manuals were in West Virginia. Ohio & Pa. had none.

With that size truck and engine you must be looking for towing and not just run around town truck.
With that in mind I will say IMOA allison has a history of making the best automatic for heavy duty applications.
