I have a case 970 that under a light load the govenor surges. like when I mow hay the engine constantly surges. Is there a way to fix this short of having the injector pump rebuilt.

We have 2 1070's and 2 1270's that did this. Couldn't figure it out for several years till just this last summer. One of the 1070's (early 1970 model) was caused by the throttle linkage but the other 3 tractors have a cable between the throttle lever and the pump. Got to thinkin and checked the pump timing, the first I checked I thought was off so I adjusted it and that totally cured the surging. So I checked the other 2 and they were dead on factory setting. So I checked the first one again and found I had read the slash marks wrong and set it about 5 degrees off of factory setting, not sure why but it works better where I have it so as soon as it warms up I will set the other 2 where I have the fixed one. Maybe this is your problem. I think only the early models had a rod linkage from the lever to the pump and the later models had a short cable from lever to a rod linkage under the floor (NOT easy to change!) and the 1270's have a long cable from lever to pump. Good luck! Let us know what it was.

Does it have a cab?--if so, change cab mounts(has something to do with linkage)--it works.

Well thanks for the ideas. I haven't tried anything yet because it's been to cold to mess with it. I did check the cab mounts. Found that the right front one has 1 bolt missing and the other one loose. That's the easiest to try first. The tractor didn't have a cab on it when I first got it and the surging got much worse since the cab was put on. But it has the short cable from the lever to the linkage under the floor. so am not sure if the mount is my problem or not

A few years ago my friends 1175 would surge quite rapidly when he was in the field. He replaced the pump and trouble shooted different things for two years. One day he was talking with an oldtimmer and he asked him if any cab mounts were broken because he had the same problem on his 1370. Sure enough his front right mount was broke which when the cab rattled in the field would cause the throttle linkage to the pump to surge. Mabe that is your problem.
