Whats the deal? Paper filter or oil bath? Are the old type oil bath filters as good as the newer paper type? Do they clean as good or better? Did they creat more vacuum to pull the air throught them and drag down profromance. Someone out thier must work for a paper filter manufacture or K-N filters or ? Why did the oil bath filter go away?

They worked because they didnt have the paper ones yet. The oil in the bottom is where the dust fell as it moved with the flow of air thru the device. In the spring when the M was in the field that oil was changed when the engine oil was changed which was every other week. Same way when the picker was on. I even ran a little water in the pre-cleaner jar amazing how dirty it got every day. Same with the B when cultivating. DAD always said oil is the cheapest repair you can buy. There is no way the old oil bath were as good as the new paper filters. Same thing applied to cars you changed the oil in the cleaner when you changed the crankase oil. I guess is just told my age.

I can't answer this for sure, but I believe the paper filters are better and easier to maintain. You just replace the paper filter. With the oil bath you're supposed to clean them out every 50 to 100 operating hours and it's a messy job that most folks didn't do. If you don't believe that, just buy one of those old machines with an oil bath and nine times out of ten, the oil bath filter was not maintained. I think the disposable air filter assembly is cheaper to make also (less parts).

That's my opinion for what it's worth.

They probably went away because of convenience, and the engine mfg's can make money selling filters... The oil was better..... how much dust can you blow thru a 1/2 qt of oil????? Besides, the motors were lasting too long.. so the mfg's had to do something so the tractors wouldn't last as long.

Problem with turbos was any oil mist (+ it's small dirt content)hitting the turbine (at 100,000 rpm or more)was somewhat abrasive and turbos could not withstand it for long. A good paper element is a little more efficient, but it is also down to micron grain sizes as well as % efficiency. Sevice requirement can easier be indicated (with pressure drop across the media), but on the down side, how many get damaged by blowing out instead of replacement?
Engine life has been markedly increased by the use of more wear/heat resistant materials as well as improved manufacture and design plus lubes and filters. I believe the Japanese started it with much closer tolerance engineering, with very high revving motorcycle engines in the '60s. Just rubbed off on the rest over the years.

Dave - Actually the oil was supposed to be sucked up into the steel mesh in operation and the air was supposed to leave the dirt on the mesh as it passed thru. As the oil drained back into the cup the dirt was supposed to drain back with the oil. But since a percentage of the oil never drained back some of the dirt remained on the mesh. While running at steep angles it's totally possible that unfiltered air could be drawn thru the oil bath filter. And in some oil bath air filters I've seen You can pretty well see right thru the steel mesh it's so coarse. I have an IHC service pamphlet at home that states oil bath air filters are only about 90% effective at removing dirt, while dry pleated paper filters are 99+%. Oil bath filters don't work well with turbochargers either, the oil tends to get sucked right thru them. The fact that tractor engines now run 10,000 hours or more between rebuilds and 30-40 yrs ago You were lucky to get 3000-4000 hours proves todays oils & filters are much better. It is possible to have "New, Improved, Easier to Use, and Cheaper" in some things
