I need a tractor to pull a 12 row corn planter with. It is a finger pick-up planter so hydralics aren't a huge concern. Which would you buy. Around here you can buy either for about the same money and I have nothing against either brand.

Will I would say a John Deere would be better than the 1086. I never drove a 4430 before, but I know the 86 series are terrible for shifting, especially if they have alot of hours on them. We have a 886 with a loader and rear blade, and I hate using it to move snow(which we are gettin alot of in NE) but you get going and then you come up to where you're going to stop. Dump the load, then trying to shift from high second to reverse 2nd is terrible. I have a Farmall H that I have a loader for it to, and tell you the truth I would rather run that H with no cab on it, because it shifts a million times easier then the 886. So I would say for planting go with the JD and stay away from the 1086, because the shifting is alot harder.

My 4430 is a '74 PowerShift with 10800 hours on it- still has the lighter rear end, still burns a point of oil in 100 hours, same since I bought it in '80. Only engine work was an out of round rod and bottom end beariings at 8700 hrs. First PS, diff, etc. For years, when going through the IH shop, I've noticed most tractors are in for rear end, tranny, or TA work. If your choice is between tractors with similar hours, tires, condition, etc. for the same money, the JD would be much better.

ever tighten the tranny brake?adjustable rod on the torque housing running down towards rear of ta housing.goes to the bottom of tranny housing, have someone push in the clutch and watch the rod move on the exhaust side on the tractor, give the turn-buckle a turn to adjust linkage for farther travel.this will end your shift problems.

If you buy a 4430 with QR, plant in B2 throttled down(1500-1800 rpm), then downshift to B1 on your turns (no need to change engine rpm).

what ever one you think is the better tractor,we pull a 16-30 with a MX200 and a 8-30 with a 1086.normally run it at about 1500 rpm @ 6 mph planting corn and soybeans.both red and green tractors have ups and downs, many don't like the 86 series cab,i don't get it but to each his own.the ih will have a better engine than the old 404 jd,the jd has better hydralic cpacity.

i'm not saying you are a liar, but if you do have a 30 series with a 466 either someone has added it or you have a tractor that deere doesn't know is out there.

Nooo... a 4430 uses the turbo'd 404, as does the 4630, it wasnt until the 40 series did JD start using the 466, (eg:4240, 4440, 4640, and 4840 last two are intercooled as well.)

JW,
I can't speak of any experience pulling a planter with it but I love my 4430 quad for pulling my round baler. I have had 2 of them, both with triple hydrualics and quad trannies.
My personal opinion of IH tractors is very much not good. I have only owned a 656 for a very short time, few days actually, found too many things on it after getting it home that needed fixing. Would have kept it if I knew then what I know now. Anyhow on the 86 series IH though, I do not like the cabs on them, I don't like the TA transmissions as I have heard some bad things about them, probably why they offer a TA removal kit. I personally have a hard time getting in and out of them, you can just walk right into a Deere. I'll be honest I have never drove a 86 Series IH basically because of the things listed above. I have sat in them and basically it made me kinda sick! I had a cousin who had 2 1486's and 1 1586 and a 1256( I think?). I don't want anyone to take offense color wise, this is just my opinion and I'm really not trying to run down the red ones, they are alot of them around but in our area you see way more green machines out there.

JW, My planting time spent in the TX/OK panhandle a planting, was spent on a JD 4630 & 4640. Both tractors had Powershifts. I agree with 4020dt. We pulled an IH cyclo 900 planter. Up shifted, throtteled back to 1500 rpms. Talk about fuel economy! Best thing is the up and down shifts at the end of each through. No clutch needed at all.
Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

But come out here to western Kansas and we will hook up your 4430 or 4440 to my 3 15 ft Krause K2 oneway plows that we use every once in a while and you will need a big hanky to wet and put over the radiator cause on the long-hot-hard pull the 1086 will peter out the 4440 pretty well have ran thm both but hated the 1086 for planting also

Even though I'm pretty much an IH fan I would go with the Deere. First because of higher resale value. Especially if you can buy tractors in comparable condition with about the same hours. Second because the Deere will be easier to operate. This is a plus if your wife is helping you or you hire some parttime help. The downside to John Deere is the expensive parts and this may have changed a little as Deere is now trying to be a little more competitive because of all the after market parts now available. Drive them both before you buy anything and then buy the one you like the best.

The 4430 would be the handier of the two on a planter . I have been pulling a 12-30 Kinze Econofold with mine since 1987 . My 4430 is a 1976 powershift , plant in 6th gear 15-1600rpm , shift back to 4th , idle down on turns never stop , raises and lowers perfect . On a plow or other heavy work the 1086 would probably out work the 4430 . I would prefer the '76 or '77 4430's , they have a heavier powertrain , final drives etc and some trans improovments , somewhere around serial### 47-48000 and up .

In cent. Mo. if you found a 4430 and 1086 with the same hours and cond. the deere would bring $2500 - $4000 more.

I have had both.I would take 4430 smoother steering, shifting all on right. 1086 shift was on left catch lever getting out. IT WAS ROUGH RIDER,I got rid of it cause of that
