The primary design criteria for row crop tractors was the ability to cultivate row crops like corn and cotton. The narrow front end permits a zero turning radius and also eliminates the low ground clearance restriction of a wide front end. Crop clearance on row crop tractors is limited by rear axle height - that's why most row crop tractors have 38" rims. Row crop tractors also have adjustable rear axles that allow the operator to work in fields with different row spacing. Row crop tractors also have a slender hood and grille to enhance crop visibility from the operator's platform (so you don't dig up the corn). Although cultivating corn is no longer common practice, the versatility that these features give the row crop tractor has earned them a utility job on almost every farm.

The way I understand it, rowcrop tractors have a flat platform (or nearly flat) for the operator in contrast to utility tractors where the operator straddles the transmission case. Utility models also have adjustable tread width, unlike the old standard models.

While it may or may not be an true in all cases (in addition to the other posts) they also have an open station (no shifters between your legs).

Rear track width is adjustable to allow rear tires to not run over the crop. Also higher ground (crop) clearance.

And front track adjustable, if it had a wide front.
