The front bearing on the lower countershaft in the range transmission on my 1086 is out. Does anyone know a way to change this without stripping the rear housing down?

Yes, with tractor split you can. Remove the retainer and cut the brg. cage so it and the rollers can be removed, then depending on how tight the brg. race is you can heat it with a torch and maybe pry it off. A small posi-lock puller may work, you will have to manufacture a heavy washer to push against since th shaft is hollow. When putting the new brg. on use a hot plate to "warm" (spit on the brg. should sizzle)the brg. Have the hot plate set up near the shaft, using welding gloves or two needle nose pliers, put the brg. on the shaft quickly, knowing that it will want to cock but you can align it with pliers. This must be done rather quickly and smoothly before the brg. cools. If you want to call me please post again. Good luck!
I forgot! The long pto. drive shaft must be removed to use a puller.
