I have had this 4020 for over a year and was supposed to have a new clutch ,throw bearing complete the month before I bought it. Used it to brush hog with 50 hrs later needs another clutch. Problem was found throw out bearing failure. Disc was in good shape. New clutch assey. same problem after 100 hrs of use. The tractor repair shop stood behind it and no charge. Same problem again after less than 100 hrs. The throw out bearing is greased almost every time I use it and the free travel is correct and the clutch is never ridin. What is the shop missing? Did not take it to John deere for repair. Please let me have your ideas on how to prevent more clutch problems. Like the tracor would like to keep but can't afford it the way it is. Thanks in advance

Sounds a little odd to me. Are you talking about the engine clutch and throwout bearing or the PTO clutch and throwout bearing? As far as the engine clutch goes, it you had free play as described, then that throwout bearing isn't turning except when your foot is on the pedal. I do recommend, however, after doing a clutch job on any 2520, 3020, or 4020 with SynchroRange trans., that after installing the new clutch, you visually inspect it with the engine running - by looking through the inspection plate. Sometimes, even with a properly adjusted clutch, if there's a lot of slop in the clutch fingers, centrifugal force will make them rub against the throwout bearing at high RPMs. It all can be easily readjusted on the tractor. When I worked as a Deere mechanic, we had much more trouble with the PTO clutch bearings going bad, or pressure-plate fingers burning off. The fingers can be replace on the tractor also.

Broken is right on that; you have to use a JD special tool to set both the main clutch and PTO clutch fingers. The highest set finger will go through the TO bearing in not to long. As long as the clutch plates and disc are OK all that neede replaced are the button screws and the TO bearing (s).

Sounds like the shop is not guaging the clutch fingers properly. If the fingers are not set properly, the highest finger will apply a radial load to the TOB and cause premature failure. When you grease the TOB,you are only greasing the slide, not the bearing itself. Once every 100 hrs is plenty.

Have to agree about incorrect finger adjustment,or worn fingers and pivot pins being the problem, not so about greasing the bearing. For a few years JD did stop selling greasable release bearings, but any built in the last 10 years again have the grease passage.
