I recently inherited a 1947 AC Model B from my grandfather. I would like to put it too work on small 2-3 acre food plots. I have been able to purchase an AC 6ft tandem disc. Also, I will be in the market this spring for a 1 bottom plow. Can anyone tell me if I am wasting my time with the model b or does it have enough hp to work these small plots?

I have seen what a B can do, and an early one too with less hp than later ones. Yours will think life is easy and will enjoy it's retirement. I once know a B that spent summers mowing, raking and then pulling a New Holland 77 baler around. And it never complined. And it did this while showing little or no oil pressure on the gauge. And it pulled manure spreaders so full the front end barely stayed on the ground--with front end weights. Yes, yours will think it has an easy life.

Hi TH,

You are not wasting your time. The AC-B is a great little tractor for small subsistance type farm operations. That's what it was developed to do; basically replace the horse. The only disadvantage of the B is that it uses proprietary mounted implements and lacks the more modern 3pt hitch. But it works well at what it does. It just cannot compete with modern, larger equipment on a commercial scale in today's world. Try to get the 2way pick-up plows if you can. They will be easier to use on a 2 or 3 acre plot. The B is a single bottom plow tractor but having both right and left hand bottoms makes it somewhat easier to use. For example, you can plow from one side of the plot rather than both sides working towards the middle. Go one way with the right bottom and come right back up the same furrow with the left bottom and so on.

Rod is correct. The B an C's were the only tractor on many 80 acre farms back in the 40's and 50's. Dad had one C in the late 40's on 148 acres and the neighbor across the road had a B on his 80 acre farm. Neither tractor set in the barn on nice days, winter or summer. We milked cows, raised hogs, and had 500 laying hens. Soo you see 2 or 3 acre plots are duck soup.
