Does anyone use a Ford F350 diesel dually for pulling their tractor hauler trailer with? I am looking at one to purchase. It is a 1989 crew cab with 111,000 miles on it. I would pull a 24' gooseneck with it. It has 4.10 gears with an automatic trans in it. Please give me your thoughts. Thanks!

Only real concern for me would be the transmission if it has the a4od plan on rebuild/replaceing it at some point. The deisel has to much torque for it. If that year still has the C6 in it it will last about forever, at least thats been my experience. Either way the guys are right keep the fluid and filter changed regulerly in either one. Best of luck.

we have about 5 ford dsl trucks
97 powerstroke f-350 4door 4x4 single wheel ton 225000
92 f-250 4x4 7.3 285000
87 f250 4x4 7.3 250000
86 f250 4x4 6.9 135000
any of the above trucks will do the job, when i first traded for the 97 single wheel ton i was concerened i wouldent like it hauling, it has been absolutly trouble free i pull a 29 foot mooritz trailor 20000 gvw and have had way to much weight on and have not had a problem, buy the truck, you wont b dissapointed

Or you can do like myself and another poster have done.

Pick up a good used Class 7 or 8 tractor. Have all the pulling and braking power you need. Air ride seats for comfort. Won't ever have to worry bout which brand is better than the other.

Got mine for $13K with 80,000 on a rebuild. 377 Pete with 400 Cat, 13 sp, double bunk sleeper, air ride suspension. At 27K#, goes up a 4.5% grade GAINING speed!!!!! Gets around 9 for milage (compares with some gassers). But the extra $27K buys many gallons of diesel. Might have to block off the radiator a little bit, kind of difficult to build enough heat for efficient operation.

Yes but doesn't the insurance cost kill you with a class 8 truck.

It might be a bit higher, don't know what a 2004 $40,000 PU insurance cost these days. But the cost savings up front and the elimination of interest on the $40K, it's worth it too me. Financing $30K @ 5.9% for 60 months adds over $4700 in interest costs. The financing for the $13K cost me $1600. Difference of $3100.

I do know that when I had it insured for commercial hauling with a 150 mile radius is was $2200 a year. That was $1 million liability, full coverage on the tractor and trailer (40' cornhusker) and $5000 of cargo insurance.

Since I took it down to farm hauling with the same coverages it's down to $1300 a year.

My whole vehicle package is reasonable (to me anyway). 2 cars, PU, horse trailer, single ax grain truck and the semi, all covered for $500K liability $100K property damage for less than $2500 a year.

I have a 95 crew cab dually 7.3 with auto. Its got 226,000 miles on it and runs like new. I love it, comfortable to drive. I pull a 25 ft deck over with a 5 ft dove tail and the truck has no problem pulling it with a 9,000 lb tractor on it. Definetly change the trans fluid and filter evey 50,000 miles. Get the truck I think you`ll like it. Good luck, RT

I pull a 20 ft trailer with an F-250 with a 5.4 engine. It works just fine so the F-350 should work great fro you. Be sure to change the transmission fluid and filter every 50,000 or so.

I too am about to buy a Dually. I have used them before. But up here in Mi they do not have a lot of traction off road or when it is raining. And you have a very hard time in the snow. But if you keep about 400# in the box It makes it a lot better. I'am talking about a four door. I guess the 2 doors would do a lot better. A 460 Eng. Is Ok but the 7.3 Diesel is the best. I see some of the Diesels have over 200,000 Miles on them so the one you are looking at should be good to go. ( FORD POWER ) Dave

I have to give IH credit. The 7.3 powerstrokes are hard to beat. But those 6.0's we'll see. Heard of too much too soon to trust one, and can still pass em' with my 7.3

My take on this is that the 6.0 was their way of meeting current or upcoming emmisions requirements. They may have rushed it a bit, but I'll bet that engine will turn out as good as any of the newer high-tech low emissions diesels.

In Barbara Marsh's book, "A Corporate Tragedy", there is an interesting section on how the for-runner to the 7.3, the 6.9 came about. It's an interesting read.
