accualy on a positive ground system you should hook the positive cable last to a good ground away from the battery, this way reduces the risk of explosion. one little trick I use is to unplug the charger from the wall before disconecting it. another trick I use being that my 6V charger died is to hook 2 6V batterys together in series and charge them as a 12.

Harry;
I also bought a 6/12 volt charger from Walmart about 8 years ago. I use it regularly and it's still working great. Paid about $20.00 for it.

The charger and the battery don't care if its positive or negative ground. So hook it my pos to pos and neg to neg just like it was any thing else. The only problems with them things is in peoples minds

On any battery, connect the positive from your charger to the positive side of the battery, and the negative lead to the negative side.

Don't make it complicated.

hey thanks, the only reason i was asking is i think i saw somewhere where a guy was going to convert a tractor to neg. ground and use the same battery and some one said that the battery may not work well like that? i was just curious as i bought a little 6/12 volt battery tender and was wanting to keep the battery charged. thanks, chris

dont forget to take off battery cables to tractor when charging,,being a positive ground and all,,,,and avoid the risk of burning any wires or components up.

Not a bad idea, but generators are far more forgiving that alternators.....

This is really confusing to people, but polarity of the tractor makes no difference at all. Just look at the battery. You are charging the battery. All one needs to focus on. Hook up the pos of the charger to the pos of the battery.
