Briggs Stratton Starting problem

Just installed a nice new snow blade on my mower and of course now it won't start and we're expecting a few inched of snow. Here's the details:
Birggs & Stratton 15.5 HP OHV. I was trying to jump start the battery with a charger. It sounded like it was getting close to turning over and starting. Then the seat fell back onto the jumper cables (stupid design). Now when I turn the key I just get a buzzing noise.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a newer engine/tractor?

You cannot jump start the newer engines. The reason why is because you introduce too many volts to the regulator and the electrical system.

Contact Briggs&Stratton, they will tell you the samething.

****Take the battery out of the tractor****

Charge it. Check the volts.

Reinstall the battery.

Yes, most of the tractors will require that you are seated on the seat. A safety feature! Parking Brake On?

Still doesnt start? Have your local dealer inspect the engine. Because you probably fried the regulator trying to jump start it.

Did you get it running yet? If so, what was the problem?

If your engine has the solenoid as part of the starter, it could be that the starter pinion is not fully extending into the flywheel gear. I've seen where dirt and dust gets on the starter shaft restricting movement of the pinion. If the battery isn't fully charged, there's not enough power to fully lift the gear through the dirt so the solenoid will reach the electric contacts and spin the starter. In such a case, I've removed the starter and cleaned the starter shaft, pinion, overrunning clutch and solenoid lever pivot. That works for a while but the real cause is the dust that occurs during mowing is blown into the starter area by the flywheel fins.

Could be that your starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. If so free the gear up, (counter clockwise screwdown) and try the key again. If that's not it, some mowers have to have the seat down against a contact under the seat frame or there is a small plastic push switch for the pto that could have got fried, there is also a push switch for the inch-brake pedal that could of commited suicide. Most of these switches are very cheaply made but cost around $8.00. Hope this helps..... ...

Clean and tighten yer battery cables! When all you get is a buzzing noise, they are loose, unless the battery is dead!

Is your batty charger still working, when the seat fell? Could of shorted out the leads and caused your diodes in the chaaarger to blow thus the bussing when you try to start the engine.

sounds like the starter solenoid went bad.

It sounds like a bad battery, have you tried charging it, and if so, what did the charger tell you? If possible, check the battery with a volt meter.

check the battery cable connections before you do anything (clean and tight) check the most obvious things first.people tend to look for a crisis before the simple things
