Started driving OTR when I got out the service in 1979. After a very major accident in 1990 I went to operating heavy equipt. for several years till my nerves settled down. While I have never returned to road driving I did start driving again 6 years ago. I presently haul fuel for a major US truck stop which allows me to be at home every day.

Been on the road for 10 years. Sure has changed a lot in that short time. Don't know if anything good has come from all the changes other than the equipment...

Todd wherebouts in the Show-Me do you call home? I live down by Jackson. I have 30 Yrs. on the road and beleive me other than the equipment it hasn't gotten any better than it was in 1974. I drove for several yrs. before I ever showed my logbook to a cop, now anytime you get pulled over for anything the first thing they want to see is your "comic book" and if they have time they want to do a roadside inspection and I beleive as states need more revenue it is only going to get worse as has already be seen when they are trying to "commercialize" the hauling of our antique tractors to and from shows, they are taking the "hobby" part out of the hobby.Would I like to have a "real" job? Yes but I am still having to much fun out on the road and besides that this is where the money is. Tom

Do farmers who drive part time count? Besides having my own truck I also help a friend of mine haul livestock once in a while. Been doing this about 28 years.

look kid, I am the same person you will be in about 16 years from now and believe me I know how you feel. My dad did the same thing starting in 1957 so I know it sucks. The thing to remember is look back on the time when you were growing up at the things you had and wanted. Your dad is probably like mine in the respect that he wanted you to have the best he could provide by doing the only thing he knew how to do to get it. My dad quit school in the third grade to work on the farm so he didn't have a whole lot of education but he did have what it took to raise 4 of his kids and two of his deceased brother in laws. I can well remember standing at the front door wondering when will daddy get home and thinking maybe when he gets back he won't have to leave again. I've gotten older now and I understand what he went through to get me where I am today. Granted he didn't want me following in his footsteps but I just couldn't help myself. My parents have been together for 48 years now and you must undestand that it takes a special kind of woman to stay faithful to a man she only see's once a week or month for a few minuets or hours. Please try to understand all your dad has sacrificed for you and one or two siblings. The world isn't the most forgiving place there is, so if your family can't forgive you for doing what you have to do to take care of them then it's really not that important that you do it, unless you really love them, in which case it doesn't matter, you do it anyway. My dad is 67 now and I know that a time will come that he will no longer be there for me and I haven't figured out what I'm going to do without him. I know there is still alot that he hasn't told me yet, and a whole lot more that I'll need his advice about, which he will, after he gives me a chance to fall on my face a few times trying it on my own. So just remember the older you get the smarter he'll get.

SORRY ABOUT THE LONG POST but sometimes I have to let my feelings out to someone and perhaps help them understand what life really is about.
