I am kicking around the idea of buying a used 1 ton dump. Just for personal use to haul sand gravel mulch cordwood etc. Probably would only get 1000 miles or so a year. (Course if I do get one I will find that I have more friends than I thought!) Is there anything better or worse with an electric hydraulic system as opposed to the PTO driven? Which one is likely to pose more maintenence problems?

I agree with everthing Johnski said.
I've used an F350 with Pto driven lift for roofing for the past 9 years and a Chevy 3500HD with an electric motor driven lift for 4 years and neither one has been much trouble. These trucks are dumped 4-5 times/week each, frequently overloaded, and often caked with mud from bad conditions at the landfill. The Pto drive shaft has been replaced once and we did burn up a solenoid due to bad connections on the electric lift, but I think either set-up will give good service.

Pitch,
It depends on what you prefer in a transmission. If you want to get an automatic you are pretty much limited to the electric/hydraulic system. You won't be dissapointed though. I'm a mechanic for a D.P.W. and we have 6 one-tons. 1 std. trans with a PTO, 1 auto with electric/hyd. and 2 with central hydraulics (belt driven hyd pump on engine and hyd valves for dump and snow plow). The electric/hyd unit has been very dependable and trouble free and has plenty of power for dumping. By far the best system is the central hydraulic one but it is expensive and you probably won't find too many used trucks with them. I'm specing a new '04 truck now and central hydraulics will add about $4,000 to the price. The std trans/PTO is old school and the most troublesome on an older truck. Worn linkages, leaky PTO seals and rusted up driveshafts are just some of the problems. All of our larger trucks,Class 7 and 8 dumps have live hydraulic pumps shafted off the front of the engine no more PTO's. Hope this helps.

Sorry about the Brain Fade on the math. 1+1+2=4 not 6. We do have 6 F-350's but two are pickups.
Too many snow storms and too little sleep. :(

I had a C-30 that came to me as a flatbed. I had an electric/hydraulic lift installed, and hauled the 1 and 2 cu yd loads that the others couldn't be bothered with (End of quote). I soon found out why they couldn't, but that's another story. The lift gave me no trouble, even dumping 2 and 3 yd loads of sand (5000 to 7000 lbs). Admitedly, I only used it for about three months before getting a bigger truck, but I sold it to a friend who had no trouble with it that he didn't bring on himself (broken wires, etc.). Respect its limits and, for the money and amount of use you anticipate, I think you would be well served with the system. Avoid dumping on a side-hill, and expect dumping to take maybe half again as long. And you can't slam the bed around like the big boys do, to empty wet dirt.

Well to start with let me tell you I'm a retired trucker, the last job I had was driveing dump trucks. You will like a pto system better then and electric system more power less problems, more control etc. I have one on a 65 ford its factory and it has never had a problem other then being low on fluid once in a while. Its been a farm truck for 20 years and just keeps going. No I didn't use that as my road truck it was a tandem 10 wheeker that I built from a road tractor. I have a friend with the other type and it won't lift much and is always needing some tlc.

Thanks for the replies. Type of drive won't be a deal breaker unless it is a twiisted shaft or something serious.
