I have a 77 Ford 250 with the 400ci. for a snow plow truck. When it warms up, the starter won"t turn it over fast enough to start. If you leave it sit awhile it will start fine. The timing is correct. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you.
PS there is no indication the it is overheated.

I'd guess that the advance is sticking or some other timing issue. Back it off some and see if it starts.
From what I've seen of bad modules on Fords, they just plain won't start or fire when the module goes south. We used to carry a spare module behind the seat for our old ton with the 351 windsor...

I agree with Dave in Texas. The retard curcuit in the control box has gone south.

some vehicles have the exhaust pipe very close to the starter and when the engine is hot it makes the starter not work correctly. some GM and Chevy trucks have that problem and maybe some fords. some type of heat shield might be the solution to the problem.

If when its turning over the engine spins fast then slows down and then spins fast again your timing is off. Common problem with a timing chain that has see a lot of miles. And from what your saying that sounds like your problem. Back the timing off just a tad and if it stops your problem then you know the timing chain is getting old and should probably be replaced, and if you replace it don't forget the sprockets

My vote is for it just being so loaded up with carbon that it's increasing the compression. We tend to forget old problems like that with these new electronic fuel injected modern engines.

Could be the starter, out of time a tad or even a bad cell in a battery. How do know timing is correct? When timing chains are stretched a tad the light doesn't even work real well on them. I have had several of the electronic ignition boxes go bad, and they all just plum quit when they went. I carry an extra one in the truck with me.

Ground cable from battery could be loose or corroded where it bolts to the block.Starter maybe is wore out.I would check all the cables first.

Probably the bushings in the starter are worn, allowing the armature to "drag" on the fields. When everything is warmed up good, the steel in the starter will expand, and this makes the starter drag even more. You can replace those worn bushings, but if the armature has been dragging against the fields long enough, the damage is done, and your best bet is a complete rebuilt starter.

Might try checking starter. As I recall, a worn starter will turn over slower after getting warm.

If it has the electronic ignition box on the wheel well, they will go bad and not set the timing back to start. 90 yr old Ford mech. told me that one day when I was having problems. Put a new one on, no more problems.
