Need some help fellows, just purchased a 16 hp,single cylinder lister diesel engine to run a 12kw generator. the engine has two 24" dia flywheels and a handcrank. you have to really get the flywheels up to speed (maybe around 200 rpm) to overcome the compression stroke at disengaging the compression release. My wife will not be able to crank the engine. on a bad day i would have trouble. i'm thinking of rigging a lever-mounted starter with a friction wheel to drive a flywheel only during starting process.

if you are still with me, anyone have any ideas on the easiest/cheapest/best starter to remove the gear/bendix and add a simple rubber wheel to. or is this the wrong approach. yes i know i would have been better off with a modern engine, but i love this old design.

Obtain a large Delco starter from a diesel engine that has a third bushing. This type has the nosepiece mounted with multiple socket-head Allen screws so it may rotated to different positions for different applications. Remove the nosepiece and starter drive, and you'll still have the armature in 2 bushings, with the shaft sticking out.

How about using a V-belt around the flywheel, and using a V-pulley on the starter? You'd probably have to rig a guard so the belt couldn't get inboard of the flywheel, and wrap up. Hinge the starter so when it starts, you can loosen the belt, and let if fall off the outside of the flywheel.

Some of the older cubs used a starter generator and I would think one of them might work well since it was set up for a belt you might be able to use it as a belt drive and charge the starter battery also
