Re: posted my tractor adventures upon another forum yeaterday. Do to my sinility excuse, I don't rmember where.
Had the milk house heater aimed at it had it cover up all night, yet when I went to use the tractor today the steering box remaine affully tight. Can't remember it ever being this tight before. Can only figure the grease inside is drying out.
Then, I wondering how does one lubricate these internal steering parts.
Thanks in advance.
Fern

Fern:
Are you talking about the steering gear at the steering wheel or the pedestal up front? If this is the steering wheel gearbox, yeah, sounds like it could be dry. Is there oil leaking around the pitman arm shaft? If so it probably is. Look right behind the battery tray at the steering gear. There should be a sort of flat area almost the same height as the battery. On top of this hump there is a plug. This is the filler plug. What I did on my 4000 was to remove this plug, drill and tap for a 1/8 in. pipe and install a grease fitting. Then I pumped it full of corn head grease, which is a soft, sticky grade 0 grease just for gearboxes. Takes about a tube and a half, and your seals won't leak anymore.
