In most places these trucks are severely discounted due to a history of problems with these engines. Rule of thumb, things usually arent priced significantly below the competition because you get lucky, they are usually priced that way because the seller knows what the market will pay. Case in point: mid 90's Chevy diesels sell from $3K to $7K here (with under 200,000 miles) while Dodges and Fords wont be under $10K unless they have over 300,000 miles and may not be under $15,000.

I have a 1994 with 160,000 miles on it and it has never given any engine problems. The electronic injection pump had been replaced just before I bought it at 58,000 miles, and I have had no problems with that, either. I have heard of some engines failing well below 100,000 miles, and some are still knocking along at 300-400,00 miles.

Yours has a updated motor with improved cooling, and, I believe, some re-design of areas of the block that were prone to cracking in the older 6.5's. I believe there was also some seal re-design to prevent oil leaks.

Of course, if you have bad luck, and the engine goes down it's BIG BUCKS to fix, or replace, as are the Duramax's, 'strokes, and Cummins.

I know for a fact that GM wanted to save weight on the engines so stupidly they started shaving the block right by one of the cylinders, which lead to the cracking... I just can't recall what years this occured and when they finally got smart!
