THEIR IS A LOT OF TALK OUT THEIR ABOUT THE BIG THREE PULLING POWER, MILEAGE, REAR ENDS , ECT. I CAN'T JUMP UP AND BUY ANYTHING NEW SO I WILL HAVE TO STAY WITH WHAT I HAVE. A 2000 GAS CHEVY 2500 CREWCAB 4X4 3.73 REAR VORTEC 7400 STOP AT EVERY GAS STATION TRUCK I ONLY USE IT TO PULL TRACTORS . THE POINT - I HEAR A LOT ABOUT CHIPS , CHANGING THE EXHAST V8 OR V10 IF I HAD A FEW DOLLARS TO SPEND I WOULD BUY A NOTHER TRACTOR IS THEIR ANYTHING THAT CAN IMPROVE MILEAGE WITHOUT HAVING TO SELL THE FARM?

Can't speak for today with the computer controlled engines. Technology has improved a lot.

In 74 I bought a new Nova 0 miles. Right out of the crate, mileage was around 12. 350 4V automatic with 3.07 gears.

Changed the exhaust to headers with duals milage went to a strong 14. Changed out the cam and intake for better breathing, milage went to 17-18. After tweaking the carb (spread bore Rochester quadrajet), balancing and blueprinting the distributer (point and condensor shoved the timing from 4 BTC to around 16 initial around 32 total) and air filter, changing rear tires to 15 from 14 inch. Mileage leveled out at about 20-21 keeping my foot out of it. Put your foot into you just hung on for the fun ride on the way to the tire shop!!!!! !!!!!

Pay off for all of the above in addition to intial cost (about $500 or so, i did all my own labor) was tune ups were done every 3500 miles. That's all the plugs could handle.

Today's engines have to "go" a certain milage without tuneups and have been "de tuned" to achieve that.

The very first place to start with any engine is to get it to breath better. On BOTH ends. Today's diesels already run the turbo for most of them so the input is somewhat taken care of, but for gassers fresh air intake improvements and exhaust will give you the best bang for your buck.

Get a k and n air filter and cut the factory muffler off and have a flowmaster installed.Nice power and mileage gain (2-4)mpg.Big blocks like to move air.

No, you don't need to run duals but a single exhaust on a BB chevy should be 3.5 - 4" in diameter. Actually if you want to stay emissions legal a single exhaust is probably the way to go.

I'd have to agree with Jim... I had a '92 F-350 4x4 w/460 v-8 &had heard lots of good stuff about Gale Banks engineering. Bought their "power pack" kit for my rig which consisted of "tri-y" headers, an absolute MONSTER stainless steel exhaust system and a K&N air flow system. Set me back about $1500. Bank's literature claimed gains in horsepower and mileage... there was absolutely NO DOUBT about the increase in power... the truck was a dually & unless I was careful, I would squeal the tires taking off from a stop light. I didn't notice much in the mileage department, though... as Jim mentioned, maybe 1-2 mpg. But, I figured if I was burning all that gas, it sure was nice to have a ton of power to go with it!!!

I had a '92 Ford F150 with a 302in it,(175,000 mi) stopped everytime it even seen a gas station sign. Ordered a 3" dual kit from Summit racing and put on it, decent sound, not too loud. increased power, fuel mileage increased some, maybe 1-2 MPG, the impressive part to me was the extra paower gained.I think the price on the exhaust sytem was 150-175.00, not 100 % sure.
