Just wanted to say that mad cow disease can be totally prevented. Feeding bone mill and feather mill and tankage to cattle (strict vegetarians) is what causes it in the beginning. There is no reason to be feeding this stuff to cattle. Some may be doing it because it is cheap feed. There is no reason in the world why this stuff can't be fed to hogs. They are not vegetarians and it would be harmless to them. Looks like they might be able to trace the Mad Cow back to Canada. Anyways, anybody that is laughing should in reality take a serious look. If we had a big and real outbreak here in the U.S. the beef industry would likely see devistating loses and a big dent into our economy. The beef industry was doing real well based on exports (good for economy), but even this deal as small as it was has thrown a monkey wrench into that. Well anyways, just seen alot of Mad Cow jokes on here (I know they were all in good humor) but I just wanted to put a serious post out here on the line. If you are feeding tankage to cattle, please stop. Just my two cents worth.

The only problem I have with killing 450 calves to stop this occurance of BSE is that it is comparable to killing the first 500 male babies in San Francisco to stop AIDS.

Also if you are going to get on your soap box learn the proper spellings. The term is "meat and bone meal (MBM).

Also, BSE is the proper term, not mad cow, which they are not.

And no I don't feed any bone meal here all natural and my average on tuesday....fat limo hiefers....1181 lbs...@ 49 cents...[40us]

If any good can come of all this it will be that traceability is the norm for all animals.its been proven that a cow can pass it to her offspring. In the UK we went through a period of denial in the early months of this new problem but when it became obvious that this was a problem like no other it called for a total re-think of how beef was produced.A total ban on meat and bone meal was introduced in 1987.3.7 million animals were destroyed over time to prevent them entering the food chain. The system now calls for a paper trail from birth to death of each animal, only by this method can the public be assured that beef is safe to eat.British beef is now once again allowed to be exported. One thing to remember through all of this is that CJD (the human form of the disease)is the most horrible way to die immaginable,if preventable, would you want it to happen to a member of your family.

Humour and "black humour" has been a stress reliever as long as there has been people. When we can't laugh or smile at ourselves is when we are real trouble.
