Be Aware!!!
We just received a life threatening message via AT&T internet relay from a scammer in Nigeria, who now lists his location in Colorado.
We had listed a front end loader in mid December and since then a number of e-mails have been transmitted with the prospective buyer. A very large check for about 7 times the asking price of the loader arrived and was turned over to the county sheriff today. Just a hour ago our lives were threatened for not following through with the scam directives. We share this to help put this kind of crap to an end and encourage YT to try and do what they can to ward off the potential scams that are becoming a part of our lives as we try and enjoy the communications and help given by legitimate YT users.Any help will be appreciated.

Actually, I'm glad to hear someone did something positive against these knotheads. Maybe our country wouldn't be in such a sorry state if more people had enough brass to deal with crooks instead of hiding their heads in the sand. Also these guys try to pull these scams because they must be successful or they would go away. Pushing the delete button is ok but, if someone takes a more beneficial role for everyone it's foolish tocriticise them for it. Thank you rem for taking a stand.

Felt some clarification is in order.
We had what appeared to be a legitimate offer for the loader. I indicated that the only way I'd accept payment was a money order or bank draft. We received a cashiers check which the police said was bogus.
What tipped us off besides the excessive amount of money was that the sender claimed the remainder of the over payment was needed for a sick uncle and we were to forward money immediately.
Thanks for all the responses. Hindsight is always the best vision. These folks are getting better at sounding legitimate.

Rem, thanks for the heads up.

In general, I have to agree with the folks below who say just erase these emails & forget about it before things escalate to this level. I don't know how you got to the point of getting a threat or a check from them, so I do not want to sound judgemental to you - but for all in general: Do not respond to the greed, don't play with them. Don't reply to any spam for drugs & cheep loans & all that.

All of the above are in the same deal - they flood the world with their garbage, and hope that 1 in 1000 or 10,000 will reply. They can make 'good' money off such low replies, because it is so cheap to contact that many people.

If one walks down certain dark alleys & neigborhoods, one doesn't flash a wad of cash to see what happens.

Well, the internet is a great place for research & bonding of ideas - but it also has some dark alleys.

I'm with Paul & others on this one. I have a son & a cousin (very well connected) thats a Federal Marshal and I don't think I would want to play even with the extra help I have.

If you play with fire, your gonna get burned!

There have been many posts on these forums about these scams, even one or two previous ones where people have been threatened. What I can't figure out is why anyone would respond to the emails in the first place, much less reply with address and further contact information.

Why don't you people just learn to delete the oringinal email without responding to them, or forward the original email to the FBI, or whatever, if you think that is worth the trouble. Several times in the past someone has posted some email addresses to report scams to various Federal Govt. agencies on some of these old iron forums.

Several have posted on here that they have replied to the scammmers, or smarted off to them. THEY ARE CRIMINALS, WHY MESS WITH THEM? I don't suppose there is much chance of them hunting you down, but when you are dumb enough to reply to them with a payment address, and get a check from them in the mail, I suppose there is always a possiblity they could come knocking at your door!

I don't get why people need to ask about these emails either or respond to them - when you deal with crooks you can expect anything.

Reply to hold on.. hold on now...

#1. I always look up the source header for and suspicious email so I have SOME idea where it actually came from.

#2. I don't know if I was raised too badly... I was taught that if something seemed to good to be true, it probably wasn't true, and I was taught not to be greedy. Most of these scams rely on convincing people there is some great profit in it for them, and the scam succeeds because of their greed.

#3. I don't claim to be smarter than ANYONE here. It's just that on the dozen or so message boards on old iron, or old collectable cars, etc. etc. I check out everyday this scam scenario justs keeps repeating itself. I would think that anyone who views any of these message boards at all would have, by now, seen one of the dozens of previous posts of these scams, and would be aware of them by now. Another good suggestion before getting involved in any of these transactions is to visit with a banker you know and trust. Most bankers these days are VERY familiar with these scams, and can offer advice.

99.9% of the time when I get one of those blasted emails,it has something of the scam nature in the subject line! Iadmit there are some that I cant tell are scams until I open them!Anyone who cant see that,or wont post his name for that matter,IMHO,needs to get a better email service that will show this! Iagree 100% with what Bob said, and anyone who is dumb enough to accually fall for one of these scams, deserves what he gets! 49 Cubber!!

i can't abide that. not without the particulars. name callin don't solve nothin neither. recall that details are left out in this. as i said earlier- did the seller know that the payment would be 7 times higher than the sold price? he does not indicate. i don't believe in baitin crooks, if he did that it needed to be rethought prior to the transaction. I agree with Bob, scammers would shutdown if no one paid them attention. Leading on a scammer is like giving a temper tantrum child attention, it only gets worse. i'm not sure about you guys.. but the last thing i would want to do is give criminals my home address. Honestly..what is the local cops gonna do about a counterfeit check from god knows where?? Hang it on their station wall for a laugh? i don't think they are gonna send an assault team to the guys hut in nigeria.

Scammers are counting on one ally, Greed. If we humans were not greedy by nature, they would not have a chance.
When they send a check for 7 times the selling price, they are appealing to our greed. I know it's hard to do, but the one sure way to not be taken by them is to hit the delete button whenever the offer is too good to be true. They are nothing but con artists and they consider us to be the marks.

Read his posts closer Bob, The man said that the scammer now lists his location in Colorado and to be honest if the guy is a good hacker he can make his ISP number look like that no matter where he is at so therewas no reason to think it was the foreign scam going on. Also he states that he told the buyer that he would only take a money order or bank draft which means that he didn't know about the scam of it all until after he recieved the cashiers check.

I am glad he did post here and tell the details as it helps to look for this more now. I don't sell much on here but you can bet that if I do there will be phone calls made and cash, money order or bank draft only involved. The way I fugre that scam is that if I am supposed to cahs thecheck and give someone the money who is going ot pick it up or what ever then he can send that guy the check and then they can send me the money you know? :)

Thanks for the heads up!!

I understand it is tough to forge the "source" IP address in the email header that is enclosed in the double brackets, but I am probably as naive in that department as some who are plagued by the Nigerian Scams.

I wonder... did the so-called buyer request pictures of the tractor, or visit on the phone, or email with details only a real buyer that knew anything about tractors would ask? If they did obviously they have gotten a lot more crafty. I, too, have gotten a lot of "offers" from these scam buyers that immediately gave away the fact they knew nothing about what they were supposedly interested in, and so far, I have deleted them without a second thought.

If the scammers have gotten so good they seem informed about what they are "buying", then, indeed, we need to be even more vigilant.

Maybe those of us who sell equipment on the 'net need to talk to about our local bankers for advice on other forms of secure payment, and bypass the whole cashier's check scenario. I suspect that if the scammers knew upfront there was a financial professional involved from the start, they would crawl back under their rock, and look for more naive prey.

ya, now it is colorado {more threatening that way}, before when the dealing was going on it was nigeria. these scammers are obvious because they have no idea what they are trying buy. they copy and paste parts of the ad into the email. anyone can catch on its an overseas scammer in multiple emails.
