I am dreaming of spring and looking for my next project. I got a Farmall calendar for cmas and starting thinking about a cub with mower and snow blade. Perfect. But the darn things are very pricey in my area - really cant get below 2 grand with those attachments, nice ones are 2500 or more. Geesh I could just get a nice garden tractor for that with more HP and a bigger deck...so my other thought was a smaller Allis letter series - anyone know if a woods belly deck can be attached? Models to research?

Several months of frigid boredom, so I am looking forward to some more archive reading...

Thanks for all the great comments - I should have clarified two things in my original post: I already have a Ford 2n, and like to have a second smaller tractor capable of crossing my 6ft wide bridge and working around my christmas trees. I use the ford for wide open mowing with fine results, but it seems big and clumsy working near fences and buildings, and it wont fit over my bridge (over a big stream that divides the property) So I have to drive on the road about 1 mile to cross the bridge etc.

Also, on the garden tracor comment I made, I would spend the money on an old Cub garden tractor etc, not some new flimsy lawn job. But your comments about the Allis options intrigue me, I will look into prices on those.

Mark is right about the value down the road from now. The tractor will retain it's value where the garden tractor will not. Another plus for the tractor/belly mower combo is this outfit, no matter what the brand is, will be more reliable and easier to fix when repairs do need to be made. My dad bought a B Farmall in 1975 and put a new woods mower on it. During the winter of '76' the engine was overhauled. It has logged an estimated 4000? hours since '76' and the only repairs have been a starter and generator and an annual tune-up for the tractor, one belt idler and one spindle bearing on the mower. The drawback to the tractor is it is not as maneuverable as a garden tractor and the tires can chew up the grass on tight turns, depending on the tire tread.

Steve, Last summer I saw a "GOOD" CA Allis with an off brand belly mower(not a Woods) sell for $4800. Even though I'm an Allis fan, this seemed to be VERY high. Look around and you can find a Allis B or C with a mower for allot less. Be careful buying Mowers for the Cub, I "think" that the PTO turns in a different direction that any of the rest. Although you can buy a Lawn Mower as cheap or cheaper than some of these tractors, what will you have in 10 years, a tractor that is now worth more than what you paid, or a Lawn Mower that isn't worth $.02.

The smaller the tractor the higher the price. The Cubs and the N series Fords in my book are over priced for what you get. They're cute and I've had them both and wouldn't give a good Super C for all of them. That's just my opinion!!!!

Bought my Cub last year at a local farm auction for the opening and only bid of 1600.00. It's a 1978 model with IHC belly mower. Nice little tractor that seems to work well. Be patient...they do show up at times.

Now on the other hand, another earlier local auction had a Allis B with belly mower, and it went for 4200.00! Hard to figure out people and their wants.

They generally bring 9-1500 in this area. They aren't good for much and they are geared to high for a good garden tractor..... ...

Sold my 1954 Cub in nice shape last summer. It was a great tractor, started and ran great, good sheet metal -- just not right for my litle (hilly)farm. I sold it with Woods belly mower, snow blade, plow, disk, and cultivators. Got $1400 for the whole lot, which I wasn't really happy with, but it was an Ebay acution. So, anyway, they can sometimes be had cheap, at least mine was...

I love IH equipment and Cubs are OK, but I never wanted one. I've run them and worked on them, but I've never understood the big attraction to them. They are too big to be a garden tractor and too small to be a farm tractor. Useless for PTO work unless you have equipment made specifically for the Cub. And go for way more money than I could ever justify.

If I were you, I'd look for an A, or better yet a Super A, 100, or 130. A whole lot more tractor, only needs a little bit more room to manuever. And around here, can be bought for about the same price as a Cub. Far more implements and equipment available that will work with them too.

Just my opinion, others may see it differently.

Just because they are asking $2500. doesn't mean they are getting it. If you see another add for a cub that you like, talk to the seller, you mught just get him to come down to a more reasonable figure.
