Just pulled the stem out of a large Cat. hyd. cylinder to repair a very small leak (seepage). The stem has a scratch about 12in long that is through the chrome. Will it still leak after I replace the seals ect.? Thanks alvinnms

Alvin,

I dunno. Those backup seals cover a multitude of sins. It may just suprise you.

Seems like every cylinder you reseal has dings and gouges somewhere along the travel. I think I'd put 'er together.

You can fill the scratch with Devcon, JB Weld or Bondo...and sand it down level. I have a cousin that filled a bunch of pits on a cylinder and it worked okay. Clean first. Fred OH

Deep scratch? like obo's comment, probably. Light scratch? Take some fine sand paper and sand to remove any sharp edges till it feels smooth. Then hope it works I have lucked out a couple times.
