How are these things ruined? And, what are you left with when they fail? Stuck in high, stuck in low, or won't move at all? What, besides $$$, does it take to get them back to work?

My 190xt has well over 12,000 hours and the Power Director has never been touched. They can take abuse for years. Same for the mechanical PD in the D series. My 7045 Power Shift has over 7000 hrs untouch. JoelMN

Have had several 8 speed powershifts over the years and still have four , never had a problem . Besides what has already been mentioned system pressure is very important . Low pressure maeans slipping or slow shifting which warps etc clutch plates . I always use the highest pressure spec + a little . Shifts a little rougher but it doesn't slip and burn . Also I have been told a 8sp can be taken out real quick by shifting down 8 to 7 at high speeds with a load behind like big wagons etc . Same goes for the Quad-Range and TA I am told . You can't use it as an enginge brake . OIL AND FILTERS ARE CHREAP when compared to repairs .

The old ramp and roller TA's were easily wrecked by letting the tractor freewheel down a hill or roll backwards while in forward gear or forwards while in reverse gear.

The ramp and roller works kind of like a ratchet wrench when free-wheeling, and that wears it out faster.

Slow shifting of the TA wrecked the clutch quickly, the shift should take no longer than 1 second to complete. This goes for mechanical or hydraulic TA.

I agree, I still here guys talk about "easing" back the TA when they need it, and that's men in their 50s and 60s!

1. Operator errors
2. Failure to change oil and filter
3. Using cheap oils instead of the real thing
4. Penny-Pinching by lack of maintenance

Boy, that's a tough one!

My 1964 Deere 4020 is over 9000 hours, and the power shift has never been touched.

My 1976 Deere 8630 went 7200 hours on the original Hi-Lo 2 speed. The unit was getting tired, and I replaced it with an updated unit. Easy to do, without splitting the tractor. With hours like that, I'm not gonna complain.

The operator/owner causes about 70-80% of the damage to T/A's, powershift trans,reversers,hi-lo's etc. This is done through abuse 30%,neglect60% and plain stupidity 10%. The balance of the failures are normal wear and parts failures. Some of the old T/A's required adjustments, powershift trans.,reversers, and hi-lo all require clean fluid, filter changes, and usually some linkage adjustments, most of which are ignored until a serious problem arises, and then the owner thinks a filter change, along with a top off of oil should fix it. Usually by that time there are warped clutch plates,T/A clutches that have slipped for so long there is nothing to adjust, pumps scored from dirty or no oil etc.

JD Powershifts are ruined by water in the gear case. Condensation is the main reason why tranny fluid should be changed annually. Tears up the plates in the clutches.
