I do not have a insulated shop and do not work at it everyday when it is cold. I do have a knipco space heater 150,000 btu and it makes such a smell and noise I do not like to use it. Recently I used a little weed burner just clamped the pipe to the top of the bottle and the burner was sticking out there bout 2 ft. the bottle never got hot and it made it quite confertable and my shop has draft cracks and door edges. What kind of a vent does a person need to keep this from becoming toxic. My shop is a 32 X 100 and I just try to heat the front 1/3 of it. I figured on putting a sliding storm window in my walk thru door and opening it aprox 2 X 1 for fresh air. Is that enough?

Hi Hagan,

Your asking a "loaded" question that will take a few hours to calculate to keep from killing someone.

Consider keeping the furnace room outside, maybe using an used gas/oil/electric furance. Then there's also hot water (anit-freeze) heat exchangers. Two used radaitors can be used for alot other than "cooling" water.

If your going to roll your own, do some reading so you don't kill yourself or your family. Then theres insurrance to consider.

Reminds me of a story. Remember the IH trucks from the 50s? They were famous for loose fitting cabs. Seems the salesman was showing when the customer pointed out the space beteen the cab and the door. The salesman poker face told him, "IH did that on purpose as they've had some problem with drivers suffocating"

If you shop is as drafty as mine and if you didn't suffocate with the kero heater I don't know why the propane wouldn't work. I use a little 35000 btu propane heater and it don't get too hot but it helps. better than the single burner Mr Heater that I was using.

Hagan,

I was using the space heater also; didn't like the fumes.

The local Heating and A/C shop here built this little dickens for me. It measures about 30x15x18". It has a 10K watt heater coil, an old furnace blower running at low speed & and is controlled by a thermostat on the wall. Runs on 220v.

It amazes me how this little thing can heat this big of a room. The garage is 30 x 28; it is 3 degrees outside and it is nice and toasty 68 in the garage.

Waiting for the electric bill to see the final verdict tho.

Forgot to add:

They charged me $300 for the thing, installed.

We'll see when the bill comes if this is gonna work out.
