Horatio Nelson Jackson News about the impending arrival of the first automobile ever to be seen in Lake County had reached Lakeview, Oregon, and citizens lined both sides of main street - fully expecting the Winton to blaze through at 90 miles per hour.
It must have been a let-down when Jackson and Crocker chugged up to the Hotel Lakeview at something only slightly faster than a walk.

What little gasoline was available carried an e

They encountered homesteaders who were so terrified by the automobile that they released their horses and hid underneath their wagon. Some who encountered the Winton thought it might be a railroad engine that had somehow gotten off the tracks but many, like the homesteaders, had no idea of what they were encountering.

Ken Burns/PBS did a great job in the presentation of that story with such a wonderful film. Not an easy task to make the film I'm sure.

Jackson and his mechanic had quite a dream, and above all perserverance. I expect most men today would have thrown in the towel and gone home with their tails between their legs. If they had tails that is.

You have to admire Mrs. Jackson too, for allowing her husband to attempt such a feat with such odds.

Ah yes, we boys and our toys!

Saw the PBS piece a couple of months back...GREAT STUFF!! Just imagine...having (a) enough money to pursue such an adventure, and (b) a wife who'd not only allow it, but ENCOURAGE it!

That's why most of us don't pursue our dreams...not enough money, and no encouragement.

reminds me of a story about my grandfather born in 1892? Him and my great uncle where playing in a creek when a steam engine came up the creek bed-never had seen one or been told about it-scared the living daylights out of em!
