I have a strange problem, 2 or 3 of us fair seasoned mechanics can't seem to figure out. engine will start, sometimes hard starting, needs to be run with choke adjusted to throttle speed in order to keep running, uses a lot of fuel when doing this, understandably so, what I have discovered is number 2 cylinder is not picking up its fair share of load. If I short number 1 spark plug to ground engine will run noticeably slower and you can easily hear the difference. If I do the same to number 2 it does not sound real noticeable for several seconds, then engine will slow down and does not sound the same as number one. Checked compression 60+, 2 different Mags, a X and C, 2 different carbs, all obvious things. My problem is this I'm not familiar with these John Deere 2 cyl. engines. Timing is by the book and my hair is getting thinner. Any suggestions out there. Thanks Dan

Without getting into all the stuff about un-even firing... The reason is about the same as why a Harley sounds unique..!! With the petcocks open, you will notice that it fires regularly on the Left cylinder, and is Lazy on the right one...often not even firing on the right one...this is normal for any early Letter series gas or all-fuel JD tractor...with single throat carburetor... When idling, one cylinder gets all the good stuff, and the other sucks "hind tit"...!! Has driven more than one mechanic to Drink...!!

My problem may be engine temperature related, I wonder what I should use for a spark plug type. D-21 Champion is what everyone says is good? I don't like champion spark plugs but what do you use to give good performance. It is an all fuel tractor with DLTX 34 carb, I have 2 carbs and both respond the same way. I will try getting her nice and warm before going any farther....thanks for the suggestions....Dan

dump the champion plugs are wires on correctly I had an A that some one reversed the wires and it ran but very badly but it did run. is your carb float leaking if it has the brass float in it check by shaking it do you hear gas sloshing in it? I have the big shop manual if you need one let me know

If the spark plugs are Champion or are resitor, hurl them into the trash. Use solid core ignition wires. Idle speed has to be 600 rpm,the coolant at 180+F and intake manifold hot for any chance to run on two cylinders at idle. A simplex carbed two cylinder barely runs on two cylinders at idle at the best of times. That's why Mother Deere used a duplex carb in the numbered series. If the carb throttle shaft, throttle plate is worn or any vacuum leaks it's even worse. With that compression she sounds like a all-fuel or worn gasser.
