I would like to buy a good used farm tractor. I will be using it to clear trees up to 2' diameters and working up hills. I'm guessing that a 50hp 4x4 hydrostatic diesel would work for me. What makes and range of production years should I consider? I'm tired of abusing my Bobcat 751. Any suggestions?

You may want to consider getting hold of a used log skidder if you plan on working in the woods, especially dragging trees up hills. They were designed for just what you are doing. I don't know what you will have tied up in a reasonably good skidder but, they would be much better and safer for logging than a tractor. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Don't be hasty about dozing those trees over.
Someone will pay you god money to harvest them. Then you can take the dough and buy a nice toy and have fun.
How many acres?
good luck

If you want 50hp hydrostatic you are not talking about an old tractor - I dont think anyone made a hydro that big 10yrs ago. A 2ft tree is alot to knock down with a tractor...

Anyhow you will be talking about some serious money for a rig as described.

IH made hydro tractors back in the '60's. A 656 hydro would be a good tractor around 65 hp, but I don't think they were made in a 4x4 model. These can be gotten for 5-7 thousand. Be careful
when shopping though, these hydro trannys can cost some $$$$$ to fix. You can buy 4 of these for what you will pay for a modern 50hp 4x4.

I should have read down a bit. I will agree with the post below on a crawler for the tree clearing part. A crawler loader would be the machine to use, but will set yo back quite a bit more than a tractor, and the tractor will be more useful for other projects. Check around the equipment dealers as most will RENT you a crawler by the week/month. We rented a track loader for a week to clear some land a few years ago and it cost about $1300.00 + fuel. If you can run it yourself, that would be the way to go.
I run equipment for a living so we didn't have to pay an operator to do it.
