Back in 1983 we PICed some wheat so we made hay of it. Most of it was big baled but we square baled some for barn feed. It sure went in nice but the next morning we could smell it starting to heat. So we torn it down and stacked it on it's sides with air spaces in between like only half as tight as normal. Dried out nice and made good hay.

Worked for a guy that square baled oats on the green side. Stacked in the barn on edge and spread rock salt on each layer. This was used to feed horses in the winter. Salt used to get the horses to eat it.

Find a restruant supply place and buy a couple of 50 lb bags of table salt a little salt goes a long way but don't get to carried away I have had the wires rot off from to much salt .

we bought rock salt in the 50# bags and spread it heavily between layers of bales, I think it helped, Dad was certain it helped. If you have room in the building scatter them and stack them later.

The addition of salt and it's effect on curring damp hay depends on who you ask. If it's going to work at all it takes a fair amount of salt to "pickle" anything. A table spoon full of salt on the top of each bale certainly isn't enough.

Studies have shown salt does nothing for curing, but it certainly helps the taste. They will chomp down old mouldy bales with some salt on it.
