I ran into a freind of mine today. He was sporting a nice white bandage on one of his fingers. I mentioned the fact that he didnt have that yesterday. He replied that he was selling beans this morning and there were afew that didnt go up the auger so, reach in an give them a shove. 50 stiches and a good a$$ chewing from his wife should teach him, shouldnt it?

Many years ago, my father in law was cutting wood in the bush. The chain saw slipped and off goes the little finger on the left hand. Everyone ran away and he had to shout at them to come back and help him get to the hospital, or he would have bled to death. Another time he cut his leg with the chain saw, went to the hospital and got fixed up, and went back to cut more wood. Later, he was putting a new fan belt on his Ford N, and just as he was wrapping the belt around the generator pulley, his 6 year old son climbed up on the tractor and hit the starter switch with his foot. His hand took a spin around the genny pulley, his middle finger was caught between belt and pulley and cut off the tip clean and quick. His son told the teacher at school the next day "I cut off my dad's finger last night." My wife (his sister) had to tell him to stop talking about that. He used to play the fiddle but couldn't anymore. Not enough fingers.

Was a meatcutter for ten years. Two young nurses learned to sew on my left hand. Got more stitches in my hand than some hockey players have in their face. Still got all my parts. Oh yeah, there was that rpg round in Vietnam. Almost took my right chest?breast? You know that little button on right side? Have a goodun.

According to the bill I received the other day; 3750 per finger for surgery, 1400 for physical therapy, 2000 in ER charges including a one and a half hour ambulance trip to a larger hospital. On the plus side everything works as good as before with light scarring and the cold doesn't hurt like it should. I cut two fingers through the bone but not the tendons and nerves. When I reached under my mower before the blades had finished spinning. As I told my wife at the ER "apparently haste makes waste of my fingers too". I used to love mowing for extra money but not anymore.

While working at The Muskegon Piston Ring Company back in 1964 A woman was loading cast iron piston rings on the turret which milled the oil grooves in the rings using a stack of cutting wheels to cut multiple ring grooves in stacked oil rings. She was talking to an operator beside her when the machine indexed and proceded to cut the oil grooves in her fingers. She had to wait for the end of the cycle to get what was left of her fingers out.

A few years back , my brother reached into a hay bailer to help a flake of hay along(rebailing broken bale). He was wearing work gloves. The fork come down and into the back of his glove. Shoved his hand into the chamber , and the guillotine chopped it off. It was the last chop before tieing the bale. He reached in with his right hand , grabbed his left hand. He walked about 800 feet , when he saw one of his boys come running out of the house. After hollering to dial 911 , he passed out along the road. Believe it or not , the doctors sewed his hand back on. A little deformed , but everything works. And like we all know , he had no business reaching into that bailer to begin with. I think he was paying so much attention not to get caught up in the pick-up tines , he completly forgot about the fork.

That's why you carry a pitch fork w/you and feed the broken bale from the BOTTOM of the pick-up!!!

Got my right index finger shortened severely in Jan 1972, and the workman's comp insurance company said it was worth $2000.00 if you took the pay out over a 10 yr period of time. Told them where to stick it to keep it out of the sunshine, and they paid it in a lump payout less the 10 0/0 penalty. Have never been too happy with that settlement. I am fortunate enough to be left handed. I have always had to wear a glove on it when it is cold, and have the worst time trying to scratch the tip of it when it itches! Gene Davis

Working at a meat packing plant I injured my pinky - tore the tendons and it hangs a little crooked. Was given 40% disability in that finger and got a whopping $450.00. Wish I had them cut it off, 12 years later it aches all the time when cold and has about 0 grip.

It's just amazing how fast something like that can happen. I was working in a barn at our old place several years ago, making Christmas presents and lost the tip of my right index finger in a jointer. I was wearing gloves because everything was cold, knew better and all, when the blade caught the glove. Ouch! Finger still looks funny but, works ok. I later put heat in the top of that barn and turned it into a wood shop. I should have done it sooner.

Several years ago, my wife took me to her office Christmas bash, and introduced me to an older lady, one of her co-workers. That lady wanted me to meet her husband, saying "You two have something in common! You're both woodworkers!"

I used to teach industrial arts, and I do a bit of hobby-woodworking from time to time. When I shook the old fella's hand he looked at mine, and said "Why you've still got all your fingers! How long you been workin' with wood?"

As I answered, I noticed that he was missing three fingers on one hand, and two on the other along with part of a thumb! Figuring this was some old cabinet maker that had operated for years with pre-OHSA equipment, I said "About 20 years! Any how about you?"

He said, "TWO years!" Then he proceeded to tell me that two fingers were eaten by a jointer, the end of the thumb by a router (WHILE CHANGING A BIT!) and the other fingers were cut off with in a tablesaw accident! I'm standing there speechless, and he asks "Do you know where I can get a good deal on a big bandsaw?" I recovered enough to to tell him I didn't know where he could get a good deal, and that I wasn't sure he really needed one!

Well, i lost the end of my right first finger in WW II (To the first joint), along with my left foot, and most of my teeth. Uncle Sam has paid dearly ever since! Makes it tough to type the right way! Now i use hunt and peck! But, i can still pick my banjo! Oh, he gives me a new foot every so often--that doesn't hold me back, and the "store teeth" work pretty good! They're like stars--they come out at night! Heck, when i go to bed at night, the spare parts piled beside the bed would break yer leg if ya tripped on them! Best way to get over losing some part is just grin and bear it. Of course, losing yer Dad is not included in the foregoing advice! Sorry to hear about that! RJ

Had an insurance policy once that spelled out what each limb etc, was worth. got to thinkin that this policy was costing me an arm and a leg just to keep it. Called and ask it they could just send me what the policy was worth that day. Few days later got a check for $3.16

my dad caught his hand in an auger cost him all his fingers and most of his thumb. took a while but he did learn to write left handed the way he used to with his right...it bothered my dad rest of his life..and his right hand was always cold...hope and pray doesn't happen to anyone...guess it taught me from that time to not take chances with farm equipment...next to my dad dying was about the saddest day of my life, and i can remember it like it was yesterday, and that was almost 20 years ago...

Lost all my fingers on both hands except the thumbs in a punch press in 1957. I got $6600.00 over 3 years for them. I was a die maker and probably lost $30,000.00 in income while retraining.
