The hardest oil change I ever did, did it yesterday on my Polaris it took me over an hour and getting that *%#$# sump oil plug off and Back on was a nightmare. The Polaris is nice machine but the brilliant engineers should have made Maintenance easier. The easist oil change was probalby my Ford Truck, sold it a year ago. My old Farmall wasnt bad just messy.

The lube oil for the upper and lower bearings above the mechanical seal on a 1900 HP 3450 rpm 4KV heat transport motor in the reactor building. 128 of them in the entire plant. 1st you get in through the gate with the vehicle security pass, empty your pockets and get your lunch x-rayed while a bomb sniffer booth checks your person. Get frisked with a wand if anything alarms. Go to change room and strip out of civies and into radiation underwear and overalls. Get pre-job briefing from senior tech. Check personal dose accumulation then tritium and gamma levels in boiler room. Besides regular TLD badge, program a DCD badge, tape on extremity TLD’s to fingers/feet. Get a gamma meter from stores. Get authorized by the Shift Superintendent and the 1st operator. Wait for Holder Of Record to walk the permit isolation points and hang safety lockout padlocks. Meet with the mechanics to enter the reactor building together. Get dressed in plastic suit with ant-contamination overalls on top, safety glasses and hard hat then roll tools through the airlock. Make certain going through the correct airlock into the proper unit, they all look the same. Remove tritium respirator and pull on plastic hood with view window after plugging into breathing air supply. Double check pump identification, there are 16 per unit in two rows and they all look the same. Drain oil and check low alarm float switch inside a confined space, it works fine. Laying on side between cooling lines with head and one arm reaching into pump base. Replace switch under protest anyways as no one can figure out where the alarm is in. Refill with 15 gallons of oil and alarm is still in. Contacts are measured closed on switch. Get prints out and take the six previous work reports with a grain of salt. Go back into reactor building and find one of two wires on the wrong terminal strip location on the motor instrumentation junction box. Some one mixed up referencing A,B,C,D,E,F,G etc to terminals 1,2,3,4,5,”5”,6 etc. Get out of reactor building again, decontaminate tools and check tools and self in monitors again. Put in bioassay for lab to check accumulated internal dose. Put extremity tlds in shielded box for rad control to read again. Go to senior tech and double signature wire identification change for documentation group to investigate. Explain several times to management what was found when where and how, both in person and on a work report.

Hy-tran on 560 farmall...only 'cause I wus stupid. Drained all 16 gals in to half a plastic drum...man, wasn't ready for all that pressure and soaked the coveralls. Changed filter, cleaned screen and put plug back in. Removed fill plate and refilled. That was the easy part. Hard stuff started when I dropped one of the cover plate bolts IN THE DANGED THING!!!

Working after work, in the dark, in winter in an open front cattle shed...SHEEEEET. Two days later, got the cover up high enough to stick my head inside and look...after draining the thing again. Can't see it.

Tried magnets, little clamper deals, everything. Thought maybe I was mistaken and it wasn't actually in there. Put the cover back down and together. Started it up, and rolled backwards about 2 feet and could hear it - POP - POP - POP.

Took another 2 nights to actually find it...it having bounced through a hole in the bull gear, that I swear wasn't even as big as the bolt itself. Got it finally to drop to the bottom and grabbed it through the drain hole...

NOW, I know to actually remove the danged bolts completely and set them aside BEFORE I remove the cover. Then, replace cover before even reaching for them bolts...

Oh well, guess I learned a few things, the hard way as usual.

M60a1 tank. Takes a crew plus a mechanic and a wrecker operator. Not to bad once you get the pack (engine and transmision) out. Takes about half a day as I remember.

Was draining diff oil out of a cat 793 haul truck, hold about 900 liters. Cross shift put a transducer into the vent to create a vaccum to make pulling the drain plug, less messy. Transducer was put on wrong putting 90 psi shop air into the diff, one mechanic was soaked with 50 weight diff oil trying without sucess trying to get the plug back it. Should have had a video camera.

How about messiest? Large Koehring hydraulic excavater with a v12 detroit diesel.Apprentice mechanic drained "engine oil" into empty 55 gal.drum about 5 min.before quiting time one friday nite.Monday morning there was about 200 gal.of hydraulic oil on floor of shop,parts dept.,and offices.The good thing is "somebody" brought in fresh donuts every monday morning for a long time.

I know this is the hardest but I had a car where you could push an oil pan in just past the front bumper and then from the top you could get at the drain plug and filter with no problem.

The hardest oil change was on a Chevrolet Vega that belonged to my sister-in-law. My hands are big enough I had a real hard time getting through framework to get them onto the filter. Once was enough, I told her to hire it done and I would pay.

My 1949 Chevy 3800 truck is messy since it has a drop in oil filter instead of a cannister spin on.
A suction gun won't get all of the oil so some of it has to be mopped out.

1997 F-150 4x4 Had to wedge the filter through the A arm to get it out and the same to get the new one in. Plus the filter drained all over the suspension and made a total mess.

Father-In-Law's 1993 Ford 3/4 ton truck, with 351. The placement of everything was very logical but his repeated use of a "gosh-darned" MONKEY WRENCH had the plug shaped like a worn out ice cream cone! I had to use an angle grinder to flatten two sides of it so vise-grips would hold!

A pair of Cat D-399 diesel generator sets. They were in the desert in Saudi Arabia. These were "prime power" sets that were only shut down in an emergency. As such they had dual oil sumps and dual filter banks on each engine. You could switch a valve and run the engine off of one sump and filter bank while you changed the oil and filters in the other sump. Then you would switch the engine over to the other sump and repeat the process. The temperature in the shade was around 110 to 120 degrees. Inside the generator building it was more like 150 degrees. I don't recall exactly how much oil each sump held, but it was around 100 gallons per sump. Needless to say, it wasn't one of my favorite tasks. When I was working outside, I kept my wrenches in a five gallon bucket of water. If you left them out in the sun for more than 10 minutes, they would raise blisters on your hands. When a breeze would blow during the afternoon, it felt just like you had opened an oven door. No one ever went to Saudi Arabia for the climate. I won't even mention the sand storms.

When I was mechanic in mid 80's it was the '84-'85 Nissan Maxima with autmatic transmission. Lift car, remove filter, but can't get it past transmission mount. lower car, reach behing engine and remove filter. place new filter behind engine, raise car so you can see where to put it back on. Lower car and put in the 4-5/8 (or some such rediculous fraction) quarts of oil. Got paid for 12 minutes to do this from the time I got the ticket 'til I got back to the service desk.

A1971 Plymouth Duster I had. Only because someone had really torcked the oil filter on. Took over an hour to get free. After cutting it half trying to use a screwdriver through the filter, I finally got it using a chisel and beating the bottom ring to losen it.

Must have been the same guy that put the filter on my '73 Charger! I did the same thing, tore the filter in half with a screwdriver, tore the rest of the filter off till I got down to the plate, and then used a chisel to rotate the plate to loosen it! Took 2 hours!

But the absolute worst was a Chevy Citation that had a 4 cylinder in it. I was working at a garage in Champaign 20 years ago. The filter is located on the "firewall" side of the engine, above the catalytic converter (which is as hot as a firecracker), and behind every other thing imaginable. You can't even see the filter... only feel the outer edge of the can! When you finally get it loose... you get a face full of hot oil, hot oil running down your arm, hot oil on the hot converter and exhaust system. What a dang mess!

Hydrostatic unit on a Wheel Horse garden tractor easy to drain but took forever to fill had to run a stream about the size of a match stick any faster and it would just burp back out of the fill tube

My toughest oil change is every time I change it in my LX 485 New Holland Skid Steer. Its obvious that the idiot engineers who put this engine in this machine never changed the oil filter. One thing I found that helped was when I went to get a filter at car quest they said there was two different numbers one for the New Holland engine which mine has and one for the engine they used to use. The wrong filter works much better than the proper filter.

96 Geo Tracker and Toyota SUV with a V8 you have to remove the skid plates to drain the oil.

I'll second the Tracker, On mine you not only have to remove the skid plate and the grill guard.
I ended up cutting a hole in the skid plate.

remote oil filter under the radiator behind a hidden door. filter was upside down so you were sure to get a facefull everytime. handtightening the new filter always producted a bond stronger than welding.
same vehicle-fuel filter inside frame under driver's door, the steel line had to be loosened from tip to tail to spring it enough to get the filter out. another facefull of gas to wash off the oil.
