I am trying to decide between diesel or gas engine on a utility tractor. I am looking at the MF 35. Does anyone know the pros and cons of each? I,ll be using it for lawn, post holes, snow, maybe with a loader.

Thanks

Hi Doug,

I personally like diesels as there very simple to keep running and more fuel efficent. Change fuel, air and oil filters, drain the fuel water seperator every few weeks and your maintaince is done.

Of course when they break down, typical repairs are usually higher but a good running engine will last a very long time.

If you're considering a light duty tractor a gas engine is more practical. Now if you are going to plow, pull a baler, corn picker, etc. a diesel engine is the choice for me. A gas engine will start in any weather if properly tuned, most diesels must be preheated in sub-freezing weather.

diessel are generally better - no small items to maintain - plugs, points, wires, so they start better - typically farmers and some ordianry people if u shop can get diessel fuel cheaper if u get the dyed stuff without paying any road taxes on it - working hard in a field the diesel will use less fuel but probably not a big concern for you - diesels can be harder sarting in the winter - but not necessarily so - as far as expensive overhauls , etc they area all expensive -

bottom line: the fact that every new tractor sold (other than the smallest lawn mowers) is diesel should point you to the way the industry feels is better

Small diesels are used in garden tractors even though they cost more because they are the cheapest way to get around new emmisions loop holes for small engines.
