Okay then, How Dumb is this idea?

Hi Guys,

I spent all day yesterday preping and heating my garage floor; then I spent all Christmas morning putting down the first coat of this rubberized latex floor paint.

While searching for a floor covering, I ran across a picture of a garage with a grey floor and knotty pine walls....One sharp looking garage!!

So, I get to thinking this morning while I'm painting away the hours, "Why not just put up 1/2x6" tounge and groove straight siding for the walls and cover it with a varnish of some kind?".

We used to do this all the time on the inside of wooden grain bins (without the varnish, of course). Does this make any sense? Is this stuff expensive?

Would you share your thoughts? Thanks,

Allan

when I insulated and lined my garage I was at a sale where they had torn down a bunch of barracks at airbase. I bought more than a pickup load for under 20.00 When I was pyutting them up I got tired of the job and was hoping would run out but got all of 28x32 wall done except above doors and I used plywood there at first just went with varnish but later painted a gray sure is a nice hideaway from wife and grandkids ha

When 7/16" 4'x8' OSB is selling for $18.99 a sheet, I'd hate to think what 6" T&G is selling for. Put 1/2" Water Proof Sheetrock (Blue) on the bottom 4', and the regular sheetrock on the rest of the walls.

Just my O

Just wondering what type of foundation you have ?
Block, floating slab ? Only because I don't see any of it cause your walls run clear down to the floor where any water or snow slop off your cars will rot it out ?

Hi Mike,

It is a slab sitting on 10"x4' deep steel reinforced trenched footers. The garage floor is 4" of fiber reinforced concrete and the apron/drive is 6" of fiber concrete. Bottom sill plate is green treat sitting on a contact seal layer.

'Sides, my cars & trucks don't get dirty..... ...Ha! :>)

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Have read your posts since you tried to get the projet started----- Putting the T/G up at a 45 DEG. angel. More work plus more lumber but would look GREAT.

Allen I would ABSOLUTLY put a layer of drywall under the t&g. It will save your garage in case of fire (provided the fire dept. gets there in a resonable amount of time) I also would look at a less flammable water based polyurathane finish, you'll have less fumes putting it on also. If you are going to work out in the garage you ought to enjoy as much as possible. Good luck!

Not a dumb idea if you like wood interiors, (like me) I built a new house 3 years ago and have over $20K in cabinets, 6 panel doors, moulding and paneling. Keep in mind that if you want to do any welding drywall is better for a fire code. I do looove T-G boards though. Keep us posted with pictures on what you do. That floor looks real nice.

Kurt,

Thanks, you just made up my mind; I like that stuff too.

I threw that 16' workbench up against the west wall last week and am planning on putting a mahogany veneer pegboard between those two windows.

Then, I'm gonna go with the pine T&G for the rest of 'er.

Pardon the clutter, I've got everything up off the floor until I get the second coat of this flooring down tomorrow morning. Trouble is, it has got to cure 2 weeks before I can put any traffic to it.

I've got the tounge&groove in my shop but then mine IS an old grainery!!! LOL. mine ain't varnished and I can drive nails wherever I want. Another neat Idea would be to get some native red cedar.

Hi Guy,

I really like the look and feel of that tounge and groove stuff. Gives the room a "solid" feeling or something. Paneling always comes off as being.....well, paneling. :>)

Wouldn't the red cedar be darker and require more lighting? I'm an old guy and wanted to stay with the lighter 'pine look' for brightness sake.

Dunno, I'm gonna call the lumber yard this morning and see what the tounge and groove stuff sells for these days. I haven't bought any since before my big 'meltdown' back in the early eighties.

Had some moisture damage to the sheetrock in the laundry room and to prevent it from happening again, I ripped out all sheetrock 48" up from floor, natural joint line, and replaced with 1/2" ply then onto that I tacked a bead board looking ply that was sold in 4'x8' sheets cut in half by Lowes, point of purchase, so that it would look like wainscoating. The first level of ply was just to bump out the bead board just proud of the remaining sheetrock. Easy to do and finished with a honey stain and poly.

Did a project this past summer where I was using a lot of 1x6 V grove an bead board on things like wanscott, cabinets and the like. Materials supplier had to special order the v grouve and bead board and that was cheaper than the in stock clear pine. You have an excellent idea, just place your chair rail at the correct height to cut down on waste. I would suggest that you put this up over a layer of 1/2" drywall and mud the joints at least one pass. I have a project comming up this spring were the lady wants an attached garage with interior finished to match the inside of her house including flooring heat and air conditioning. I like that kind of work.

That looks beautiful! Put up the sheetrock and then the t and g. Money is not a problem. Most homeowners live in a house 7 yrs on average. Divide that cost by seven yrs and you get your answer. Do it.
good luck

This is great. It just makes me want to wallpaper my barn. Should I use flowered or some of that pre-papered paneling. I'm not sure which the cows will appreciate the most. Let me know what you think.....

My old barn has so many cracks I just stated tacking up all the empty horse feed bags to knock down the wind a bit. Sorta interesting pattern but dont look too bad and starting to keep that sweet feed smell. Also keep an eye out for large cardboard boxes like furniture or appliances come in as they look real good after you clean out a few paint brushes on them.

I know where your coming from. What is Allen going to do with his garage? You goin to put cars in there, work on tractors or have a cocktail party.

Your not going to want to drive nails to hang stuff if you put V-groove in, costs too much. Sheetrock is a fire barrier but you'll have to put stringers across it if you want to put up hangers. The sheetrock's cheap, with a good eggshell paint can be cleaned easily. The T111 will cautch all the crap that floats in the air.

Your new garage looks great. I'm trying to save up and build a combination garage workshop myself. Depends what your useing it for.

well the one thing im surprised no one has mentioned is that sheetrock has much better fire resistance than wood, this may or may not be a big concern depending on what you plan to do in the garage, also if it is attached to a house many times code calls for sheetrock on the wall between the house and garage. if it were my garage i would want sheetrock but its your call

I agree with doing it in sheetrock. The code in this county is if the garage is attached to the house you must use 5/8 board. I Keep the walls smooth, and paint with a semi-gloss. Makes the walls easy to dust down. I'm dealing with dust here in the desert. Dry wall gives you better protection, against burning down the shop, then where you gonna hide out from the wife.

Allen, where did you buy this paint at? I would like to do my shop floor with something like this. My shop is 32x40, I wonder how this paint would hold up under my horse drawn equipment wheels? I don't mean spinning in circles just rolling them in and out taking to shows. It sure looks nice to me.Keep us posted on your walls!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I guess that is why there is such a fixation over old barn lumber. Know of one fellow who planed and cleaned up some for interior room in house remodeling project. I never seen the finished product. I love that wood look, and it would help prevent that "sweaty" condensation problem as temps change on metal or plastic coverings.

Why not use T-11 Cedar Ply siding? I mean, if you want something that looks good with that "wood" look. It comes in 4x8 sheets rough cut on one side and runs about $21.00 a sheet. It is grooved on center many different widths. Of course, you can paint/stain it or leave as it is. I used it on the exterior of a barn as well as on the inside. Came out looking good for me.

It sounds like a neat project. The reason you don't see it done is cost. No matter if you do it or hire someone else to do it, 4X8 sheets of ANYTHING go up quicker and cheaper labor wise than the 1X6 T&G. If you notice porch floors that used to be of 1X4 T&G are now gone. Too labor intensive. Money talks, but quality lasts. oleblu

Structurally, it's a dang fine idea. Good solid wall, looks nice, and gives ya LOTS of places to hang stuff.

Expense-wise, it ain't gonna be cheap. I just put 40" wainscotting out of vee-match T&G in a bedroom. I haven't gotten the bill for materials yet, and I ain't looking forward to it.
