TIG welding copper

I was just playing with my tig welder and decided to try welding copper. It works and looks nice . Anyone else ever hear of welding copper with a tig

Hi Bryan,

Sure have as alot of CU roof jacks are Tig welded.

If you make an lapp joint then you can use the edge of the lapp as the filler for the weld. I've also used this method with welding SS sealing welds.

To use the lapp edge as a filler, spot tack about every inch, closer if thinn material, then clean with a SS wire wheel, then wash the molten puddle down on the base metal.

If you want a nice full rolled finished edge weld, then hold the weld puddle more on the top lapped piece. For a flat weld face hold less on the top laped piece.

With a little practice you will not have undercuting.

I've been told it about it at school just never tried it. Did you use electric wire or buy copper filler rods?

Brian, guys in the pipe trades have used a 3/4 copper cap tigged onto a short nip and another copper cap to keep their tungstens in for a long time.Mguy. Merry Christmas!
