Okay -- I sold my Farmall Cub because it didn't meet my needs (but gosh, I did like that tractor)! Anyway, I need to buy another tractor. Here's what I need, give me advise on what to look for:

Small and low to the ground.
Needs to be able to use a bucket and blade -- for light landscape work, nothing real heavy.
Three point hitch.
Gasoline with carb -- I don't understand FI.
Mower, bush hog type.
Won't break the bank on parts, I do all my mechanical work myself.
Did I remember to say cheap (under $3500 or so, not including attachments)?

I know this is a big question, but I'm not sure what to look for -- or even if it exists.

Thanks for all your help, and Merry Chirstmas!

Terry

Good comments below. In addition, I would look for a GAS MF35/135/50/150/65/165. Tough, tough, tough! A bit pricey on some cream puffs, just keep looking. Also, a Ford 3000, 601, etc. May come across an MF 235/231 gas for <$3500. Looking is the 'fun' part!

Have you considered a IH 444 Lo Boy ? I think you can find one for about what you want to pay. They can usually be found when sold from highway departments, etc. They make good small utility loader tractors too. Has all of your required features with a few more, such as Live PTO.
Merry Christmas to all.

I have an IH 424. Same wheelbase as an 8N Ford. Same rear tires, so it's as compact as an 8N. However, it has live hydraulics, and PTO and factory power steering. It's a diesel with 10 HP more than an 8N. Yes, I have an 8N, too, but it's pretty much an antique parade queen, since I've had the 424.

Bob,
Yes pretty much the same tractor as my 2444. Mine is C153 gas, Many had BD154 diesel in them. Good little workhorses huh ?

If you can find a good one, an IH 300 or 350 Utility model would suit your purpose. They didn't come with a 3pt hitch, but can easily be set up for 3pt. Many came with the 2pt "Fast-Hitch", but some had a standard drawbar. I think all of these had live hydraulics, and most had live pto. Some had power steering, and some had the TA transmission for extra speeds. They are maneuveable, easy to work on, plenty of power in a small package, and will take LOTS of abuse without complaint. The front end is heavy enough for a loader.

Some of the later IH utility models might also be a good choice, if the price is right.

Sounds like you're describing a Ford 8N. However, the 8N is a little light in the loader duty department, even though thousands of them have loaders attached.

Around here I never EVER see an Oliver. I wouldn't know where to start to look for parts if I had one. I'm sure it's a great tractor...just not popular around here.

Maybe a better choice than an 8N would be if you could find a Ford 601 series with power steering. That would make it much more loader-friendly. The 601 would be a bit bigger than a Cub or 8N and would have lots more hp than either (about 32 hp).

If you can find an Oliver 550 or Super 55, you may
have your small work horse. Value was always there
in these other green tractors, but price was not
inflated. An abused model, or sale consignment is
best to avoid. Oliver built a lot of 550's, so
AGCO & after market parts can be found. Good luck.
