Was looking at a Farmall M on ebay and it says 100% restored! What does RESTORED MEAN?? In my vocabulary it is put in "LIKE NEW CONDITION" Like when it came from the factory. I see this tractor has a "straight pipe" rather than a muffler: a "round screen air breather" rather than a fruit jar type: NO HEADLIGHTS: NO Front Grille Little screen: and funny looking front wheels: JUST WHAT IS IT WITH SOME?? AM I TOO CRITICAL??

come to think of it I remember a old neighbor who died several years ago. He started farming with horses and when he died had a 7 & 806 M WD-9 and several older farmalls. He also restored from the ground up a couple old "jayhawk stackers" he used new lumber and had them nearly perfect. I do remember one of his favorite sayings though. (There is a fine fine line between antiques and junk!!)

I don't even look at the words. I don't want to trust someone elses restoration. Who knows what they did. I look for old iron that needs my love. I plan on taking them down to the bare block and down to shiny metal and giving them another 60 years. My daughter will probably sell them for $100 bucks when I'm gone.

I love this topic. It really pi--'- me off. There has been previous discussions about this because I was in on it. I would say only about 1 out of 10 ads stating the tractor is restored to mint or 100% is factual. I like the ones that say restored to expo but: the tires show weather checking, converted to 12 volt, doesn't smoke {it shouldn't if it was restored you idiot} etc, etc. There are alot of auctioneers out there really s t r e c h i n g the truth also!! I guess there are various defintions---most don't agree with mine. I'm gonna stop now because I could really go on and on but NO you are not being too critical {you are thinking along my lines}

I especially like the ones that look like they were re-painted with rattle cans in a gale force wind, and where they state "restored" ...all fluids replaced ...guess changing the oil and coolant gives ya another 50 years on the engine????

I don't like the ad's that use the words 'old restoration' I know of a few tractors that were restored over 30 years ago, and still looking better than the day they left the factory.

Nowdays restored usually means a paint job. And not a good one at that.

I've come to accept that restored means little more than a paint job. While I agree with the other posts that restored should mean 'like new'. Of course to some restored means restored to useable condition (from the junk yard).

Front wheels are cutoffs I think.Did you notice the seat configuration.I would call that a novice restoration or a hiding restoration,as in hiding all the problems with it.

The round screen pre-cleaner is standard equipment. The fruit jar pre-cleaner was an option. Other than that, I agree with you. Is that the one with a starting bid of $2900?

Nope not to critical. There was a recent thread on this topic somewhere on this site. There seems to be a lot of different perceptions of the definition of restored.
To me restored means all arigional equipment in near origional condition, and excellent operating condition.

The problem with doing a "total restoration" on a tractor is that you pay $500 to $1500 for an unrestored tractor, then you put $7000 to $10000
into it to restore to new condition, then the people that want a "restored tractor" will only give you $3000 for it.

I agree. I bought my 1655 Oliver diesel for $2500; I now have over $13,000 total in it. It's worth maybe $6000. I'm going to use it though and not sell it.
