Tractor Stops After 20 seconds

I started my 1969 MM M670 Super gas tractor this afternoon. Started a little hard, but once it got going, it sounded fine, only to shut itself off after no more than 20-30 seconds of running. The tractor has not been run for a couple of months, it DOES indeed have fuel in it, along with a new coil, new points and plugs. It seems to be either a fuel or ignition problem, but I cannot seem to pin it down. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I've had 2 tractors (one of them twice over the years) have a sticky float needle cause this to happen. A sharp rap on the carb will jog it loose, and all will be fine for a day or 2....

Junk in the lines, in the tank, in the needle port, in a filter, or a fuel tank that can't breath as the others say also.

If the temp is below zero where you are, dump in some gas line anti-freeze.

If it seems to be getting gas, check for spark at the spark plugs.

Scroll down this page, several of us discussed this same problem about an H farmall that did this.

I have a question that maybe someone can help with. My H will start and run for about 20 seconds then shut off. I have fuel to the carb; is it pumped to the cylinders? A bad condensor in the distributor will cause that. will it run with gas with the gas cap off?Can you immediately start it up or do you have to let it sit awhile? 1st. thing I would check would be to stand on the carb. side and when it goes dead immediately open the drain on the carb to see if the gas ran out,( if not check fuel line and tank for trash) if o.k. then you would probably need to remove hood and check the intake manifold & gasket for leaks. This is called an updraft carb and the gas is pulled up by suction there is no pumping action.

sounds like the gas is not getting from the tank into the carb. just a trickle so it fills the bowl, then you start it and it uses the gas faster than it can dribble in.
