Tractor Starter Question

I just got my starter "rebuilt" at the local start expert's place. Spent plenty of time hooking the thing up (twice now) only to find that it engaged the flywheel one time and cranked a little bit, then stopped and would do no more. When I checked on it, I could see that the starter gear is still engaged with the flywheel gear. What would make a starter gear NOT retract, away from the flywheel, like it is suppose to? I need to know if this starter genius "stiffed" me, or if this is something I can fix. I would appreciate ANY ideas!

All of those were good answers,it might be that the drive wasnt installed right,or its the wrong one.

sounds like maybe a new brush hung up?? What was the original problem that caused the rebuild? If it acted the same maybe you have an intermitant in the field windings the guy didnt catch.

first you did not say what type of starter? some will only retract after the tractor starts the turning of the fly wheel pushes the drive back and the others are pulled back by the cellunoid

Aloha, I think there should be a spring to push the gear back after the engine starts. Is the spring there? Some automobiles have shims to adjust the spacing between the starter gear and flywheel. I don't know if this would apply to your engine but if it does, then it needs to be adjusted. Hope this helps.

Mahalo,
Howard
