Happy Holidays to All, I'd sure appreciate your collective wisdom in obtaining a replacement wide front end (complete)
for a '62 John Deere 4010 (propane) with "heavy!" front-end loader on it. I've run into a few used ones but they are about as expensive as a new heavy-duty aftermarket front end. Any pros or cons of choosing either one? I'm mostly using the tractor for moving round bales. Thanks a bunch for your suggestions.

Seems as though when a friend had that problem, he robbed one from a junked combine and with a little altering on the mount up...it worked fine and was next to nothing in comparison to the price of a new one. Fred OH

Textrout, David from Kansas, has it right and the best opition for you,. Abilene Machine has thoses updated front ends from the 4430 and 4630 that will bolt right up to your 4010. Also they are allready JD green , so it will match and look right when your done.
Good Luck,
John A.

Call Ed Beem, Hornick, IA, 712-876-2275, he can fix you up with a front end you'll never be able to break.

Been using a 4020 and front loader for 20+ years and have never had any problems. Handled thousands of large round bales, dirt, silage, etc. If you don't abuse them they will last.
There is a place in Abilene Kansas called Abilene Machine (they also have a store in Belmond, IA and McFarland, CA) who builds conversions for 4010/4020 from 4430 series tractors for $1450 less $500 for a good core, and from 4630 for $1750 less $500 for a good core. 800-255-0337 for the Abilene store. Good luck.
David

We had a 4020 with a loader on it and it broke two front ends, after the second one we installed one from a wrecked 5020, used wheels and all. It looked really beefy on there and it was. never had to replace again.

Don't quote me exactly on this, but I think a lot of people are using the wide front ends from larger Case tractors as replacements for the 4010-4020s, particularly when using a front end loader. Maybe someone else will comment on this.

We bought an after-market WFE to put on a 4020; don't remember the brand (or know what you're looking at); it didn't last long; wound up buying JD. There are some kits available allowing the use of 30 and 40 series front-ends on the older tractors; don't know how expensive the kits or front-ends are..... .
