I built (had built) a large machinery/hay shed last spring and recently found that an owl has decided to move in at least part time. I figured that was a good thing since they eat mice and other critters that I don't want in there. Unfortunately an owl leaves big nasty "calling cards". On the hay bales, on the concrete slab, on the tractors. I would rather deal with the mice I've decided. So how do you get rid of these things?. Oh yeah, this is a three sided shed.

Doug,

FWIW, Owls are nocturnal. If there is any way to put a light in the shed they will not go in there to hunt. Being a wildife biologist...I wish I had you problem, I'd love to be able to draw owls in some how. Anyway, they are also sensitive to noise since hearing is very important to their abilty to locate prey. Good Luck.

Joe

Come evening just fire up the smokiest diesel you own, let her run awhile in the shed, if it isn't windy the owl will probably leave, three nights in a row and he'll probably move out. John in Ne.

I had the owl problem too. I just went out and run it out a couple of time a night for a week or so and it decided to move on to quieter places.

ya, this sounds like the plan. Like groundhogs, if you shoot one, another will move in.

Since owls are protected, maybe a county or state wildlife agent would come trap it for you???? Worth a try. Maybe they could relocate it on their (your tax money) dime. I wouldn't follow the below advice of shooting or harming it. Some of the decoy things might work too.

If they are in the rafters. Staple bird mesh (like they put over fruit trees) or deer netting to the underside of the rafters. It prevents them from roosting or nesting. Also keeps other birds/bats out.

I have also heard that mounting a strobe light in the rafters works.

Doug; Had the same problem with a flock of pigeons, they just wouldn't move out---so--have a little 410 ga shotgun, will handle 3" sheels, problem solved!! Owls will regeritate their food, and really cause a mess,, I have two "horn owls" now, but they stay in the trees, thank God..

If you choose this method, don't say anything to anyone. Dept. of Natural Resources in your state, may (Probably) will frown upon it. Some Owls are protected.

The idea is good, just be careful.

as far as I know all birds of prey are protected by federal law. You don`t have to shoot it just chase it out and shoot a round in the air or ground. When I did it the owl didn`t come back. RT
