OK Here is the thing. You have seen guys that have restored there tractors to like new, new or better than new condition. Everything is perfect on these tractors. They are very beautiful machines. now you have the guys that build the pullers that paint the tractors funny colors and put the shiney wheels on them, the graphics ect... you get the picture. I collect Farmall H's. I have two so far. One is restored to original, the other I am just getting started on. I would like the tractor to be unique looking. I used to build street cars but have now started building tractors. I still like the street car look but i would like to see what a street rod tractor looks like. I will be using the tractor for parades, tractor rides, pulling a hay rack with people, and just crusin the town. GUYS GIVE ME YOUR HONEST OPPINIONS ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK. my opinion is that street rodded cars were once just a normal car, now they are a beautiful piece of work.

DO IT!! I have a wd45 with a super slick orange paint job, chrome straight pipe, custom dry air intake, braided stainless fuel hoses and anodized fittings, chrome oil cover, chromed alternator, MSD ignition and chrome coil with big ol fat msd wires. I am running combine wheels and tires 16.9 instead of 13.6's I just need to fab up some tractor pulling style aluminim fenders and paint the rims and shine the tires to finish it off. It runs very well and works just as good as a stock tractor. I might even have somebody make me some "WD55" decals just to get some raised eyebrows. Have fun and do it!!! you can always return it to stock if you dont cut anything up to badly.

Well looks like you have your answer, GO FOR IT!

Like some of the guys have sadi I would cringe if it was a rare tractor or something but there are lots of Hs around.

As for my ideas, I would stay with a close to 2150 shade of red but would use a metalic flake in it and candy coat it to add depth. I would take H decals to someone and have then modify the look of them on a computer to look more sporty, like maybe a flaming H or something. I would add ghost flame to the front.

I would tub out the tires with wide low profile tires and do something cool with real small tires and aluminum rims.

The engine I am torn on, part of me says get a 6 cylinder in there and part says just mod the original and put on a straight stack. Not sure which I would go with. OR you could get a hold of a 400 engine or even an M and cram that in, mod it and pipe it.

You definetly have to keep us up dated to the progress of this project, we're on pins and needles here.

Please don't use 'pearl' underneath the paint... it will look pink under the mercury lights at the fairgrounds. Don't ask me how I know this.
good luck

I sure like your line of thinking--one tractor for pride and show, the other completely for fun.

I've had the same idea for nearly two decades. I want to get a small Ford like the 8n, put a big chromed V-8 in it, with chromed headers angling out and upward like dragsters.

Of course the tractor would have BIG wide tires front and rear.

In the 1970s, the Goodyear tire dealer in Salina, KS had such a Ford with only tire modifications. Think of flotation tires like the big spray rigs use. I've got a picture with my little girl standing beside it.

The dealer said he used it in parades and to catch the eye of customers driving by. Biggest problem with it was that the larger tires really made it too fast for parade speed.

Yes sir, take that "H" and have some fun. I'll expect to see it in the Daryl Starbird car show in Wichita next year.

Red, you're a man after my own heart...a street rodder heart! I've got a '51 and a '52 International L-110 pickup, and one is gonna be restored (almost) stock while the other is gonna be my street rod (OK, purists; I know "street rod" refers to pre-'49...lighten up!). Since you plan to keep one H stock, I say take the other and GO FOR IT! My ideas would include--like ChadS on the pullin' board is doing--swapping in a 460/560 or International truck 6-cylinder engine (because you won't have to alter the stock bellhousing)...then adapting something like the fuel injection system from a Jeep 4-liter six...mucho chrome on about everything that doesn't move out of the way (valve cover, t-stat housing, tappet cover, oil pan, fan, alternator--10SI is probably easiest)...I'm thinkin' high-back, six-way power seat...low ground clearance by going to shorter tires, front and rear...a little bit of that "higher in the rear than the front" attitude...disc wheels, either chromed or powder coated...detail all the castings (block, head, bellhousing/trans case/diff case,) to super-smooth, and then lay a mirror-finish paint job--personal preference is IH red, but with ghost flames on the sheet metal, and maybe some stardust metalflake just to be different...power steering added, of course (use a stock [chromed]GM/Saginaw p/s pump, just like Char-Lynn did on those H's and M's)...

As long as you've got the stock H for people to compare it to, I think a little forgiveness is in order here...and I think that, done right, the result could be one bi+chin' Farmall!

look under the tractor pics on here and there are pictures of an Allis WC with chrome and a HEMI in it. Also a Farmall B or and A done like a low rider with a flame job and baby moon hubcaps. If you can't find them email me and I'll send you the pictures

Maybe someone should suggest to Jesse James that they do a tractor on the show. That would be one show to watch.

sir,i am with you. maybe look @ british steam tractors, "road & show engines. i am going to decorate my steam tractor the same way. may chrome the stack, w/brass ring on top, etc. the purists will gnash their teeth, but so many steamers, especially, are so boring, red & black. send me a foto when done. be blessed.

This is an interesting idea and I love it when people think outside the box. Anyway, like a car, I wouldn't hack up anything really rare and valuable, but as one other gentleman stated "it's your's, so do what you want". I don't think most tractors have enough sheet metal to pull off a really wild paint job. I've always been a fan of metal flake paint. I'd go with one color. I'm partial to candy colors. I think ghost flames would better than the traditional ones as more of the base color would show through. Also, pinstriping is a great way to accentuate the lines of the machine. I'd pay close attention to detailing as well. Clean, clean, clean. I might use some billet accessories and lots of stainless hardware if the budget allowed. Chroming some of lesser looked at parts (fan pulleys, radiator mounts, etc) will bring them to life as well. The more I think about this, then better I like the idea. Guess I'm a whako too :>). Much luck, and please post pictures.

Gordon @ NH

Hey Farmin Red, Go for it. It's your tractor and you can do it any way you want. Up here in my area there is a guy with a purple "C" Allis with yellow flames etc. and it's finished off to show car quality. It gets more attention than any of the stock tractors and the farm guys like it as well. It's your canvas so have at it. Send in a picture when it's done. Just my two cents worth, allisguy

Did you see "Monster Garage" last night? Jesse James and his crew turned a Peterbilt into a 3 wheel trike for the street! I think your idea is more realistic, and would have greater crowd appeal.

I would like to see polished aluminum disk rear wheels, possibly cut from something like a 1" plate using bolt on hubs and matching front's too. And while you're at it how about a stock carburator and governor with a custom polished aluminum manifold and small turbo. That'd be an "H"

I don't think it will really appeal to tractor
crowd to see a purple H with chrome wheels, big
V8 with headers and flames painted on the hood.
Tractors have rural/work/good old days appeal. Hot
rods have that crusin/girls/oldies charm. Seems
like it's more acceptable to alter autos. Cars
appeal to a wide percentage of the population, old
young, male and female. That said, if you were to
build a street tractor, you certainly would draw
a lot of attention. Using a common tractor like
the H would draw less criticism. If you own it,
you can do what you please.

If yer talkin' pure fun, go for it. Lower the front and raise the rear, use some larger diameter low profile rears. How about stretching it out a couple of feet, a nice candy apple IH red, maybe a flame or two, discrete of course. I like it, I want one. John

Maybe some things like chroming the oil filter canister, maybe the cover plate for the governor. I've been thinking of painting the cast rear wheels on my M white, kinda like the 1206. As long as we don't get carried away and make the tractor look unrecognizable. I think a few little touches here and there would be O.K., even some contrasting paint instead of chrome.
Back when the 350 and 450 Farmalls were first introduced, an awful lot of Ms and Hs were painted to resemble these new tractors, I thought they looked pretty good.

However have given some thought to attaching a fake Nitrous Oxide bottle system on my Ford Jubilee just to hear some comments from various folks.

A Custom tractor would be awesome! In my humble opinion, I'd use the original engine, add custom tube headers, chrome it out a bit, and custom wheels and paint would finish her off. Tractors don't have to be perfectly restored to be enjoyed. All three of mine could use cosmetics, but I love them anyway! Good Luck, and post pictures if you do it!
